Dennis B. and Patricia L. Worthen Travel Funds for Research

Grants will be awarded for travel during 2026.
The Dennis B. and Patricia L. Worthen travel award is to support research work conducted at Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions.
The travel grant provides up to $5000 to researchers whose work would benefit from in-person access to the following collections and collecting areas:

Eligibility Requirements
- Worthen travel grants are meant to support travel to the library to view materials in-person. Anyone who wishes to use materials from the designated collections for research may apply including, but not limited to, students at any level of education; faculty members; visual and performing artists; writers; filmmakers; public historians; and independent researchers.
- All applicants must be over the age of 18. Applicants who reside beyond a 100-mile radius of Cincinnati, OH will be given priority.
Application Process
With your application, you must also submit:
- A Project Proposal (up to 4 pages total) consisting of a narrative description of your project (500 words), identification of the specific collection, a list of materials you wish to use (see ArchivesSpace information), a bibliography of materials already consulted, and desired dates of visit/residency.
- Other Supporting Documentation in the form of a 2-3 page resume, CV, artists' statement, or other supporting documentation that lists or summarizes your relevant experience, education, accomplishments, or work.
- Itemized budget.
- One letter of reference that includes comments on the proposed project.

Potential Projects
Worthen Travel Grants will be awarded to new areas of investigation or expansion of the existing corpus of content relative to the selected archive. The results shall be presented as a lecture or program at the Winkler Center. The event may be given live or through a medium mutually agreed upon by the Winkler Board/Grants Committee. A final copy of the presentation, including a transcript, will be archived in the Winkler Center and made available on the Winkler webpage. Recipients may also produce:
- Dissertations, theses, and publications
- Article(s) in peer-reviewed scholarly journal(s)
- Exhibitions
- Educational initiatives
- Documentary films, or other multimedia products and artistic works
Attribution
All works published/presented/performed must carry the attribution of the Dennis B. and Patricia L. Worthen Fund
Evaluation Criteria
Applications will be evaluated by a committee on how well they meet the following requirements:
- The majority of the collections identified in the proposal are unique to the Center(s) of application.
- Research focus clearly matches the Center grant subject(s) focus.
- Application demonstrates reasonable expectations for budgeting, length of stay, amount of materials to be used, and consultation with Winkler Center staff.
- Research project should render a tangible outcome which contributes to expanding cultural and/or intellectual bodies of knowledge.
- The research topic and collections identified for research must be appropriate to the individual Centers offering travel grants (see Center travel grant pages for details).
Expenses & Reimbursement
Research Travel Grants are paid as reimbursement based on receipt documentation for personal expenses after completion of the research visit(s). The recipient will receive a check by mail or direct deposit after submission of original receipts and other required documentation. International visitors are responsible for obtaining the appropriate visa for their research travel to the University of Cincinnati.
Travel grants will reimburse:
- Transportation expenses
- Car rental, personal vehicle mileage, parking fees, ride share/taxi services
- Accommodations
- Meals
