Mission Statement

 

The mission of the UC Blue Ash College (UCBA) Library Instruction Program is to actively support the College and University's academic mission and curriculum. Our primary goal is the development of information literacy skills for all UCBA students.

 

An information literate individual is able to:


  • Determine the extent of the information need
  • Access the information effectively and efficiently
  • Evaluate information and its sources critically
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information

Program Goals

 

The UCBA Library Instruction Program utilizes a variety of teaching tools and methodologies that recognize diverse learning styles, levels, and cultural needs. In collaboration with the teaching faculty, UCBA librarians work to create learning environments that help students develop research and critical thinking skills that can be applied both in and outside of the classroom.

The following goals represent the program's direction within the University of Cincinnati community as well as a guide and plan of action for the UCBA Library Faculty:

  • Collaborate with teaching faculty to integrate library instruction and information literacy across the curriculum
  • Apply ACRL standards for information literacy in developing student learning outcomes and customize instruction to both discipline and individual needs
  • Assess student learning in order to improve instruction and student performance
  • Create and maintain instructional technologies that support curricular needs
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities for library faculty. Employ best practices to ensure we are meeting and addressing learning styles, varying technical skills, and diverse student populations needs
  • Perform periodic review of program outcomes and goals to meet the needs of the institution and learning community

Student Learning Outcomes

Using ACRL's Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education as a foundation, the UCBA Library Faculty have developed the following student learning outcomes by course level:

Identify UC Blue Ash College Library resources and services in order to enhance academic and personal success Describe research topic in order to identify keywords for the information need State research question in order to clearly identify keywords for the search strategy
Identify basic steps in research process in order to build foundational research skills Construct main ideas and keywords in research topic in order to build effective search strategies Modify keywords and search strategies in order to refine search results based on relevancy to topic
Identify basic keywords in research topic in order to build effective search strategies Distinguish between different sources and their purposes in order to choose the appropriate source for the information need Explain value and differences in potential sources including scope, audience, and intent in order to select the source most appropriate for the information need
     
Distinguish between types of search tools and resources in order to select the appropriate tool/resource for the information need Distinguish between types of search tools and resources in order to select the appropriate tool/resource for the information need Recognize value and differences between general and subject-specific resources in order to determine appropriate resource for the information need
  Construct search strategies using identified keywords in order to locate topic-related sources  
     
Identify basic steps in evaluation process in order to determine the quality of the information Apply currency, authority, accuracy, relevancy, and point of view criteria in order to evaluate the quality of the information and its source Examines and compares information from various sources in order to evaluate currency, authority, accuracy, relevancy, and point of view
    Evaluate information retrieved in order to determine if additional information is needed
     
Explain the importance of citing research sources in order to create foundation of academic honesty Accurately documents sources using standard documentation style in order to avoid plagiarism Describe intellectual property, copyright, and fair use in order to use information ethically and responsibly
  Identify components of a citation in order to perform a citation search Use an appropriate documentation style in order to consistently cite sources
