Introducing...A New Way of Learning Toby Heidtmann, Head of Information Delivery Services Department, toby.heidtmann@uc.edu |
In an effort to meet the growing demand for more technological
support, University Libraries opened the Student Technology
Resources Center (STRC) in Langsam Library to assist students
with the production of course-related multimedia projects. The
STRC is designed to be a self-production facility where students
have access to the tools and support to do their own work. Library
staff and peer mentors are available to help students use the
hardware and software in the STRC. Students may scan images and work with Photoshop, Photo Editor, and MS Imaging to manipulate photographs. Using software such as Pagemaker or Powerpoint, they can design publications and develop presentations. Non-linear digital editing of video using Fast Dazzle and Adobe Premier is also possible. Dreamweaver, Frontpage, Flash, and Lectora are available for designing Web pages. The presentations or videos can then be put on CD-ROM to show in class or other locations. Special multimedia computers, scanners, and software enable students to convert one format to another (e.g. VHS to mpeg). Multimedia Services, located adjacent to the STRC, continues to provide multimedia equipment for UC students, faculty, and staff to check out and use. Available equipment includes: laptop computers, data projectors, digital cameras, and camcorders. The STRC in Langsam Library is the first of several such facilities planned for the West Campus through collaborative efforts between University Libraries and University of Cincinnati's Information Technology Office (UCit). These facilities for students parallel UCit's Faculty Technology Resources Center located in Zimmer Hall. The STRC is partially funded by student Information Technology and Instructional Equipment (ITIE) fees. For more information about the STRC, visit it on the 4th floor of Langsam Library, or call (513) 556-1893.
