In September, University Libraries debuted a redesigned Web
site. The new site represents a total reorganization of Web
services and includes more information, easier navigation,
and a greater number of online services.
The University Libraries Web Team began work on the redesign
in January 2002, by examining all aspects of the Web site
and graphic design, including the information architecture
and server technologies. The goal of the redesign was to improve
library Web services by designing a site that was dynamic,
easily navigated, organized with the user in mind, and that
would serve as a platform for new library services.
Although editing and testing will continue on the Web site,
the Web Team members deserve congratulations on their work
as it was a true team effort and much has been accomplished.
The team members, past and present, are:
Jerry Newman, chair
Nanda Araujo
Ted Baldwin
Minnette Brown
Melissa Cox Norris
Rosemary Franklin
Barbara Macke
Lisa Pons
Elna Saxton
Cherie Shroyer-Matchen
Erika Taibl
Rosemary Young
Suggestions and feedback on the Web site may be sent via <www.libraries.uc.edu/services/suggest.html>.Some
of the new services found on the University Libraries' Web site
include:
- E-mail notifications: From the Web site, users may sign
up to receive e-mail notifications of book requests, Interlibrary
Loan requests, and more. To do so, users should visit the
University Libraries Web site and choose "View Your
Library Record," then enter their e-mail address in
their patron record. Users may also visit any of the University
Libraries in person to sign up to receive e-mail notifications.
- E-Reserves: Recently, University Libraries began Phase
I of a project to provide online access to course-related
materials on reserve. Electronic Rerserves (E-Reserves)
enables users to access materials 24 hours a day, seven
days a week, and without the limited use typical of traditional
library reserves. Phase I is providing E-Reserves for courses
in Engineering, the College-Conservatory of Music (audio
files), and Math. Materials for a distance-learning program
in Early Childhood are also planned. Phase I will include
a test of links from Blackboard courses directly to the
reserve material on the University Libraries' Web site at
<eres.uc.edu/>.
Once policy and procedural issues have been resolved, the
service will be expanded to all units in University Libraries.
