New to this year’s event were presentations by three UC faculty members. “We wanted the event to focus solely on the publications produced by UC’s faculty, and we thought having them speak personally about their work was the perfect way to do so,” said Victoria A. Montavon, dean and university librarian. “Unfortunately, time would not allow us to invite all 137 faculty to speak,” mused Montavon, “so instead we chose three faculty members who represented well the diverse range of work produced at UC.”
Dr. Wolfgang Ritschel, from both the Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, spoke about his award-winning book Die Tablette and his painting “The World of Pharmacy 2002” commissioned by the American Pharmaceutical Assoc., a print of which he donated to University Libraries. John Drury, a professor in the English department, read two poems from his recently published book of poetry Burning the Aspern Papers. Concluding the presentations was Jennifer Pearce, associate professor of nursing, who spoke about her chapter in the textbook Cancer Prevention, Detection, and Control: A Nursing Perspective. Other contributed works included “Bone Quality: Getting Closer to a Definition,” an article by Nelson B. Watts in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research; Media Bridges Cincinnati, an architecture project by Terry Boling; and “Lean and Tasty: Fresh Paintings,” by John Wolfer. This year’s submissions ranged in medium as well as content. There was a play written by Grace Epstein and performed by the Wesleyan Players Playhouse in Owensboro, KY; photographs taken in Thailand by John Hughes and used in a book about urbanization; and a guide to clarinet playing by Carmine Campione. There were exhibits and CD-ROMs, articles and Web sites, and of course, books.
The list of publications is distinguished not only by the obvious dedication of its creators, but also by a true spirit of collaboration. Many of this year’s entries were co-authored, co-edited, or co-created by UC faculty with community members and faculty from other institutions, representing a true manifestation of academic community. This was the 12th year the Friends of University Libraries sponsored “Authors, Editors & Composers” as part of their mission to assist University Libraries in providing excellent research collections and quality service to the University of Cincinnati. In addition to “Authors, Editors & Composers,” the Friends also support exhibits and a public lecture series that draws attention to UC collections and faculty. They also fund projects that focus on improving the library environment for students, as well as the Adopt-a-Book and other preservation projects. The complete “Authors, Editors & Composers 2003”
bibliography of celebrated
works is available online.
