Cheryl Ghosh, education reference librarian, Dorothy Byers, head of the Engineering Library, and Erma Fritsche, head of Library Information Technology, along with Lisa Holstrom (Early Childhood Learning Community director), presented “Meeting the Library Needs of Virtual Early Childhood Education Students” at The Convergence of Libraries Learning and Technology Conference held March 8 in Columbus, OH. The Early Childhood Learning Community consists of 350 national and international students who receive their education solely via the Internet. The group discussed the ways libraries can best serve distance users. Victoria A. Montavon, dean and university librarian, Dan Marsh (Cincinnati Zoo), and Marcia Deddens and Ted Fowler (UC’s CECH), presented “Engaging to Enrich Learning: A Learning Objects Collaboration” at The Convergence of Libraries Learning and Technology Conference held March 8 in Columbus, OH. The panel discussed the roles, challenges, and opportunities of transforming a large collection of multimedia slides, audio, and video collected by the Cincinnati Zoo into a collection of digital learning objects for K-16 science instruction. CollaborationJane Carlin, design, architecture, art and planning librarian, and Alison Armstrong, head of Instruction Services, were appointed to the CET&L (Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) Advisory Board. OutreachAlison Armstrong, head of Instruction Services, and Jane Carlin, design, architecture, art and planning librarian, along with Kimberly Paice (assistant professor, art history) received a grant from UC’s First Year Experience program to develop “Art in the City - The Freshman Diaries”. Freshman art history students were invited to take trips to local museums so as to learn about art in the city, discuss aspects of the curriculum at UC, and learn more about University Libraries. The students used digital cameras from University Libraries’ Multimedia Services Department to record their experiences and later met in the Student Technology Resources Center to learn about editing techniques. Students visited both the Contemporary Arts Center and the Cincinnati Art Museum during Winter Quarter and additional programs are being developed for Spring Quarter. RecognitionErma Fritsche, head of Library Information Technology, was recognized as UCit’s Network and Telecommunication Services Department’s January Employee of the Month. Erma was cited for her contributions as a member of the GETit pilot group, including her “assistance in recommending and implementing enhancements to the new GETit online ordering system.” Publication
