Alison Armstrong, head of instruction services, with colleagues from Austin Peay State University and Colgate University, taught a three-week online course for academic librarians: Assessing Student Learning Outcomes. The course, first offered last fall, was so successful that it will be offered again both this spring and summer. The seminar helps librarians acquire the skills they need to create assessment tools to measure student information literacy. After completing the course, academic librarians will be prepared to work with faculty to design, implement, and evaluate tools for assessing student learning outcomes.
Reference librarians Les Vuylsteke and Rosemary Franklin are serving as faculty advisors to the UC Quiz Team. The team plays at DePauw University in February 2004. Presenting Melissa Cox Norris, director of library communications, presented “Marketing: A New Way of Doing Business in Ohio’s Libraries” at the OhioLINK Annual Directors Meeting on November 20 & 21 in Dublin, Ohio. _____________________________ In December, 17 UC librarians participated in an OhioLINK summit titled
“Cooperative Collection Development: Walking the Walk.”
The summit provided a forum for academic librarians to discuss how they
could improve cooperation as they develop library collections. The program
was organized by the Collection Building Task Force, a subcommittee
of OhioLINK’s CIRM (Cooperative Information Resources Management
Committee). In addition to Jerry Newman, UC librarians who attended the summit
include: Dorothy Byers, Jane Carlin, Jim Clasper, Cheryl Ghosh,
Angela Gooden, Jim Hart, Toby Heidtmann, Gary Lare, Sally Moffitt, Wahib
Nasrallah, Debra Oswald, Jacquie Riley, Edith Starbuck, John Tebo, Jane
Thompson, and Rosemary Young. _____________________________ A large University Libraries’ contingent attended the annual Academic Library Association of Ohio’s (ALAO) conference in Dublin, Ohio. They went not only as attendees, but also as active participants – presenting two panel discussions and one poster session. Cheryl Albrecht, associate dean for public services, and Linda Cain, UC associate provost, hosted the panel presentation “Be at the Table: Librarians at the Academy,” which focused on the role of librarians as contributors to student and institutional success. “Our job is to put ourselves out there—to put the libraries forward, make connections on campus, learn about partnership opportunities, and inform potential partners about our work,” said Cheryl Albrecht. The presentation was followed by small group discussions that gave the participants an opportunity to share their experiences in forming partnerships on campus and to discuss the challenges they faced. Pam Bach, Rose Einhaus, Olga Hart, and Cherie
Matchan, all members of the Staff Development Strategic Planning
Task Force, presented “From Training to Learning: Systematic Approach
to Staff Development.” While staff development typically is a
topic that involves only a personnel department, the presentation brought
a diverse group of speakers together to address this subject. |
