Alison Armstrong, head of Training and Education Services, Jane Carlin, senior librarian, and Cheryl Ghosh, education reference librarian, participated in the 2003 September Institute held September 8-12. The CET&L September Institute provided an opportunity for 40 members of the UC faculty to work together in a collaborative environment focusing on ways to improve teaching and learning. The Institute was organized around four faculty learning communities: Student Transfer and Retention of Knowledge, Managing the Large Lecture Class, Multimedia Based Learning Objects, and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Alison, Jane, and Cheryl worked together with other faculty to help integrate information literacy into PBL coursework. Ted Baldwin, manager of Equistar’s Information Center, presented “Selected Resources for Business & Market Information on Polymers & Plastics” for the Materials Research & Manufacturing Division’s Polymer Roundtable at the Special Libraries Association annual conference in June. Also attending the conference was John Tebo, Chemistry-Biology Librarian. Jane A. Carlin, senior librarian, attended the Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians, jointly sponsored by the Association of College and Research Libraries and the Harvard Institutes for Higher Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education August 3-8, 2003. The Institute focused on aspects of leadership, change, and management in higher education.
Melissa Cox Norris, public information officer, is a member of the newly formed OhioLINK Marketing Task Force, which is developing a comprehensive marketing strategy for use by OhioLINK libraries. Gary Lare, head of the Curriculum Resources Center, co-chaired the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Curriculum Materials Standards/Guidelines Committee of the American Libraries Association (ALA). The committee developed guidelines for academic institutions in developing and maintaining curriculum materials centers (CMCs). Areas covered include personnel, facilities, services, and collections. The guidelines were developed over a two-year period and were approved by ACRL & ALA in January 2003. These guidelines represent the first CMC guidelines ever developed by ACRL and may be found at the ACRL Standards and Guidelines Web site at <www.ala.org/Content/NavigationMenu/ACRL/Standards_and_Guidelines/Standards_and_Guidelines.htm>. Publishing Group. This resource comprehensively identifies and indexes
the collected works and biographies of U.S. corporations.
Dorris Jackson, Chemistry-Biology Library student
supervisor, and Victoria A. Montavon, dean and university
librarian, each received a 2003 President Quality Service Award. Dorris
and Vicki are among six individuals and two teams awarded this prestigious
award, which recognizes contributions to the University’s commitment
to provide quality service both to students as well as to those who

Kevin
Grace, assistant head of Archives & Rare Books, and Tom
White, acquisitions unit head, recently published Cincinnati’s
Over-the-Rhine (Arcadia Publishing, 2003), a book that uses vintage
photographs to capture a fascinating urban neighborhood. Over 200 images
reveal Over-the-Rhine’s urban characters, street life, and architectural
landmarks, including Music Hall, Findlay Market, and St. Mary’s
Church.
