On first glance this magnificently illustrated collection of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine art now preserved in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum might be mistaken for a pretty “coffee table” book. However, this volume represents a major scholarly advance for students of Greco-Roman civilization. While the Istanbul Museum houses some of the most important sculptures from Classical Antiquity and Byzantium, earlier publications of these treasures were marred by poor and inadequate photographic documentation. In this new catalogue, however, many masterpieces, such as the 4th c. B. C. Alexander Sarcophagus, are now published for the first time in true color and with a wealth of detail that affords a new understanding of Greco-Roman art. R.R.R. Smith’s scholarly text enhances the visual wealth of the plates.

If your grandparents were students in the Cincinnati public school system in the 1930s, chances are they used this textbook in their high school geography class.

“Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test” is, as the name implies, a color test that shows what areas a person sees colors the best. The test would be useful for any number of reasons and would certainly be helpful to artists or anyone that makes use of color on a regular basis.

The Gallup Brain
This database contains every Gallup Poll Public Opinion survey conducted since 1935. The Gallup Organization underwrites at least one poll of each week (minimum 1,000 interviews) and often does several polls on current topics and issues. This database is updated weekly and is current as of the most recent polling, which includes the data and analysis and stories relating to the Poll.

New in Archives and Rare Books

Gems of Rocky Mountain Scenery, Containing Views Along and Near the Union Pacific Railroad by Alfred Edward Mathews.
Mathews was an English immigrant whose early career was that of traveling bookseller and artist. During his service in the Civil War he drew scenes that were published as lithographs. In 1865, Mathews moved west and began producing the lithographs for which he is best known: images of Colorado, Montana, and Rocky Mountain scenery. These views are among the earliest and rarest for the Rocky Mountain West and their detail provides important historical documentation. This title, along with the Libraries’ copy of Mathews’ Pencil Sketches of Montana, 1868, will appear in the forthcoming publication of the University of Cincinnati Digital Press entitled: A.E. Mathews: The Western Works.

The Holy Bible. Designed by Bruce Rogers.
A landmark in the history of the book and typographic design, Rogers’ Bible is one of the most beautifully designed books of the 20th century. This large folio copy is one of 975 printed with the exquisite decorative title-page and initial letters and adds substantially to the Bruce Rogers holdings in University Libraries.

German-American Almanacs, late 19th-early 20th centuries.
These 11 additional items to the John Koegel Collection of German-American almanacs chronicle ethnic rural life in the United States. Because these periodicals often were ephemeral and today are difficult to find, they provide important documentation of the everyday German-American experience.
