In 2002, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) ranked the University of Cincinnati Libraries 47th out of 114 research university libraries in the U.S. and Canada. Last year, the annual circulation for University Libraries exceeded 446,000 and more than 70,000 volumes were loaned to other libraries. Today the needs of University Libraries are greater than ever. Consider that the average purchase price and cost of cataloging a book is about $80. In 2002, University Libraries purchased 48,812 monographs and had 26,434 subscriptions to journals or electronic services with a total expenditure of more than $6 million for collection development alone. There is mounting pressure on University Libraries’ budget from other sources, including the maintenance and expansion of technological capabilities, the preservation and repair of books in the general collection, and the conservation of rare books and materials. Indeed, remaining a top-notch resource for students, and faculty has become a formidable task in an age of declining state assistance to colleges and universities. We invite you to consider a gift that will ultimately benefit University Libraries through your estate plan. One of the simplest planned gifts can be made through a provision in your will or living trust. Bequests may be unrestricted or they may be restricted to a specific college library, study area, or program. There are also naming opportunities if you wish to honor a friend or loved one. The University of Cincinnati prefers that bequests be made to The University of Cincinnati Foundation for the benefit of University Libraries. Your support of University Libraries in this manner will ensure our ability to continue to provide cutting-edge research resources for many future generations. The Office of Gift Planning at the University of Cincinnati Foundation appreciates the opportunity to work with donors and their advisors to plan their gifts and to assure that their gifts will be utilized for the benefit of University Libraries in accordance with their wishes. If you have already included University Libraries in your estate plan, thank you! We hope that you will contact the Office of Gift Planning and join the Herman Schneider Legacy Society. We would like to thank you personally for your legacy. Also, the disclosure of your gift greatly assists University Libraries in its long-range planning and ensures that your intentions can be fulfilled.
