University Libraries continually works to improve resources: technologically through such services as the Student Technology Resources Center (STRC), and aesthetically through renovations to library spaces that make users more comfortable as they use the libraries. Langsam Library’s Info Commons works to live up to the library's reputation for improvement. Visit the Info Commons to see that we have done just that by featuring a new desk and our "Books of the Week." Info Commons received its new desk during the beginning weeks of summer quarter. The new desk's style reflects that of Langsam’s circulation desk. Not only does this make the Info Commons more visually appealing, it also provides for better service. The desk offers patrons more counter space and a specific area for stapling and whole punching. The remodeled atlas shelves compliment the new Info desk by matching the black of the desk counter top. This new layout allows for easier access to the atlas materials and offers even more counter-top space. The idea for the Info Commons "Books of the Week" was the brainchild of one of our peer mentors, Thomas Lyons. Mr. Lyons enjoyed perusing the reference stacks to find interesting and useful material, and he thought that the patrons would benefit from the knowledge of the peer mentors who are more familiar with the reference collection. Other peer mentors felt that this would be a good idea, and have enjoyed picking out their favorite books. These books may be novels that the peer mentor has already read, or reference material that they have used for classes or for their own reading pleasure. As the title reflects, the books are changed on a weekly basis, normally on Saturday or Sunday. Books from the Cohen Enrichment Collection, often included in “Books of the Week, may be checked out, but the reference material is library use only, so a peer mentor will hold an ID until the patron is finished using the material. If you have not already done so, stop by Info Commons to see the new
desk and enjoy some fun fall reading.
