A Note from the Dean

Dean Victoria A. Montavon

This Spring Quarter issue of Source would not be complete without reports about two significant rituals in the life of University Libraries each spring: the annual “Authors, Editors & Composers” event and the announcement of our ARL rank. The news on both fronts this year is outstanding! At the AEC event on April 27 the exhibit of books, articles, musical compositions, paintings, photographs, and other creative work by UC faculty was truly inspiring as were the insightful presentations by several authors. The good news continued with the press release that UC Libraries had achieved their highest rank ever in ARL -- #45 -- based on data for 2002-03. These are clearly two events to appreciate and savor in the days ahead.

Don Heinrich Tolzmann’s telling of the history of UC Libraries comes full circle in this issue with Part III, ending on the high note of the 25th anniversary of Langsam Library and Dr. Henry Winkler’s exhortation to “never forget that the library system is the very life blood of our University.” Don’s fact-filled history of UC Libraries is a valuable reference many of us will keep close at hand to draw on when an important date or event needs to be traced or confirmed.

I encourage you to read the article on Page 5 about the recent availability of educational films “to the desktop” through a collective purchasing and licensing initiative with OhioLINK. Each faculty member I have spoken to about this new resource is thrilled with this increased level of access to films that span a wide range of disciplines. Together with our OhioLINK colleagues, the UC Libraries are committed to expanding what we anticipate will be a much-used new service for our university community.

I want to end with a special note of appreciation to our library donors (listed on Page 9) for their generous support throughout 2003. Students are flocking to the Langsam Patio this spring to study and relax at the new tables and chairs there, which were largely funded by our “Friends of University Libraries.” I also want to thank these steadfast friends for their sponsorship of “Authors, Editors & Composers 2004” and for their backing of our lectures and exhibit program.
