Started in 2005 through a gift from Priscilla Neill, former associate dean for human resources, the Celebrating Excellence award
acknowledges exceptional leadership that advances the mission
of the University of Cincinnati Libraries. Five awards were presented in December 2010:
Most Outstanding Leadership Award: Lorna Newman, head of interlibrary services and government documents, for her
efforts to improve organizational effectiveness, continuous
quality improvement, and productivity. Among other activities, she led the effort to launch Illiad, the Interlibrary Loan system,
at the Health Sciences Library and customized it to meet the needs of that user group. Lorna also played a key role in reviewing and downsizing the government documents legacy collection while maintaining collection integrity through alternate online access methods.
Outstanding Leadership Award: Cheryl Ghosh, head of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) Library, for demonstrating exceptional leadership in providing quality service at the CECH Library. She was cited for her focus on users, for creating a collegial atmosphere that fosters teamwork, and for holding high standards of accountability and ethics. Cheryl integrated CECH Library resources on Blackboard and created digital learning objects to enhance instruction.
Outstanding Leadership Award: Electronic Resources Department Staff: Meshia Anderson, Susan Banoun, Jeff Crawford, Sean Crowe, and James Van Mil for their tremendous improvements in workflows to acquire, manage, and deliver e-resources. They added Google books to the Library Catalog as well as more than one million URLs. They made enhancements in the use of batch record loads and developed the necessary skills, tools, vendor connections, and cataloging protocols for an effective workflow.
Outstanding Leadership Award: College of Engineering and Applied Science Library Staff: Ted Baldwin, Rose Bruns, Jim Clasper, and Susan Hight for managing the monumental and multi-faceted undertaking of merging the services, collections, and operations of two distinct and sizeable college libraries: CAS and Engineering. Each team member excelled in taking on multiple new tasks while maintaining service and regular operations at each library location.
Outstanding Leadership Award: John Miller Burnam Classical Library Staff: David Ball, Mike Braunlin, and Jacquie Riley for their tireless work to provide excellent service to UC faculty and students, and to visiting scholars who use their excellent research collection intensively. They collaboratively developed new processes for managing materials in the new Graduate Student Reading Room and developed an improved system for managing the movement of books and periodicals within the library.
