Donors Make an Inspiring Difference in the DAAP Library

The Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) has undergone a transformation of its first floor thanks to generous gifts from Mark and Rosemary Schlachter and Jane Foster. “The change in the DAAP library is more than significant, it is inspiring,” said Rosemary Schlachter during a recent tour of the library. “The renovations reflect the creative principles of design that the teaching materials offered there present.”

Improvements made possible with the gift from Mr. and Mrs. Schlachter include:

• Knoll Interior Lab - The library’s main study area now features beautiful Knoll studio-line furniture that provides comfortable and attractive seating for library users and functions as research objects and teaching tools.
• 14-Station Mac & Scanning Lab - Computers were changed from PC to Mac and large-format Epson scanners were added to meet the technology needs of the Mac-focused DAAP community.
• Slide Collection Area and Media Viewing Room - This area now includes a media viewing room.
• Seating - Contemporary, comfortable, and attractive chairs designed by Chuck Saylor and Dennis Foley complement the DAAP building’s color scheme.
• Librarian’s Office - The office was moved closer to student and library staff areas to provide more immediate technical and research assistance.

A gift from Mrs. Foster, a DAAP alumna, has created “The Jane and Philip Foster Wing,” named for her and her late husband, a DAAP Professor Emeritus. The two-room area, located near the library entrance, includes a donor recognition wall with four paintings by Mr. and Mrs. Foster as well as the:

• Herman Miller Interior Lab/Eames Room - Designed to be a dynamic lab/study area, this room was outfitted by and named for designers Charles and Ray Eames, designers for Herman Miller. The Eames Room serves as a research collection of signature furniture, but is also used for meetings, classes, quiet study, group study, and
  events. The room features a large print donated by Herman Miller from their Detroit showroom.
• Seminar Room - Contemporary chairs by Herman Miller-trained designers create an inspiring environment for library instruction.

“The generous gifts of Mark and Rosemary Schlachter and Jane Foster create spaces where students and faculty can reflect, collaborate, and innovate,” said Victoria A. Montavon, dean and university librarian.
