Collaboration -Jane Carlin, Design, Architecture, Art & Planning (DAAP) Librarian, and DAAP colleagues Nancy Parks, Assistant Professor of Art Education, and Tarrence Corbin, Associate Professor of Art, recently received one of 17 nationally awarded “ART21” grants from the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). The grant, designed to increase community awareness of contemporary art, will fund five discussion programs aimed at local teens in a series titled, “A Cincinnati 5-Way,” and done in partnership with Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, and the YMCA. The first program was held January 20, 2007 in the DAAP Library and had attendees viewing portions of PBS’s “ART21” series on contemporary art and discussing the work of artist Michael Ray Charles whose graphically styled paintings investigate racial stereotypes drawn from the history of American advertising. Conference Participation -Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) 32nd Annual Conference in Akron, OH, November 3, 2006. Ted Baldwin, College of Applied Science Librarian, Olga Hart, Instruction Librarian, and Debbie Tenofsky, Head of Reference and Instructional Services, together with Raymond Walters College Library colleagues Stephena Harmony and Heather Maloney participated in the panel presentation “The Laptop Dinner: UC Libraries’ Online Gaming Tutorial,” at which they discussed the interactive game they created through the Library Faculty Learning Community to teach students about plagiarism and how to avoid it. Ted Baldwin, College of Applied Science Librarian, and Olga Hart, Instruction Librarian, presented a poster session “The Joy of Cooking: Recipes for Successful Web Site Management,” in which they shared the University Libraries’ Web Team experience of managing a complex Web environment where content is provided by dozens of contributors and editors from various libraries and departments. Recognition -Paul Dozier, Equipment Application Specialist in Library Technology Services, was recognized as a distinguished alumnus of the College of Applied Science. Paul was given this honor at a ceremony January 19, 2007. Service -Victoria A. Montavon, Dean and University Librarian, is Chair of OhioLINK’s Library Advisory Council (LAC). LAC reviews and approves all policies for carrying out the OhioLINK program as proposed by the four standing committees. The committee approves major funding measures and participates in strategic planning. LAC consists of library directors from all Ohio public universities (including two private universities), and representatives from independent and two-year colleges. OhioLINK is a consortium of 84 college and university libraries in Ohio plus the State Library of Ohio. Training -Pat Schmude, Conservation Technician in the Conservation and Processing Department, is attending the 2006-07 Preservation Management Institute at Rutgers University, designed to “give those responsible for collection care grounding in the range of preservation issues, technologies, and management strategies to advance a preservation program.” Jay Sinnard, Operations Manager for STRC/Multimedia Services, attended the Government Video & Technology Expo 2006 in Washington, DC, December 6-8, 2006. He attended such training classes as: Interactive Authoring with Macromedia Flash, Getting the Most from Flash Video, Animating with Flash, and Mastering Text in After Effects. |
