A Wise Investment in University LibrariesCandace Griffithe, Assistant Director of Gift Planning, candace.griffithe@uc.edu |
| Would you like to help advance the University of Cincinnati by making a contribution to University Libraries? Your contribution could go to the acquisition of books and electronic resources or the upgrading of facilities and services that would help ensure UC as a “top 50” research library system in the U.S. and Canada. Make a wise investment with a gift of stock to the University of Cincinnati Foundation, which can be beneficial to both you and University Libraries. You may be able to claim an income-tax deduction for the entire market value of the donated stock, including the capital appreciation. If you wish to make a charitable gift but would still like continued income, consider a charitable gift annuity funded with appreciated securities. You can retain a stream of income and avoid or defer the capital-gains tax. Transferring your stock to UC is easy! The UC Foundation will provide you or your stock broker with instructions. However, it’s important that you do not sell the stock first, or you may have to pay capital gains tax. In order for you to receive a tax deduction for 2006, the UC Foundation must receive the stock by December 31. If the securities are transferred electronically, the date of the gift is the date the UC Foundation receives them in its account. If you hold certificates for the stock, make sure you sign a stock power-of-attorney form for each certificate, have your signature guaranteed by a commercial bank officer, and send the UC Foundation the stock powers and stock in separate envelopes to prevent fraud. The date of the gift for tax purposes will be the latest postmark date on all the envelopes used to mail those documents to the UC Foundation, or the date it is hand-delivered to the UC Foundation office. If you choose to make a gift of stock, please consider a few of the many funding opportunities within the library system, such as helping to purchase new library study carrels and furnishings for student areas, supporting the special resources of one of the college or departmental libraries, or contributing to the preservation and digitization of special collections. Remember that gifts may also be unrestricted, which enables the Dean and University Librarian to direct funds to areas with the greatest need. If you would like more information on how your gift of stock might benefit you and University Libraries, please contact Peggy Wolf, Development Officer, at (513) 556-0055, the UC Office of Gift Planning at (888) 556-8889, or send an e-mail message to <giftplanning@uc.edu>. We are happy to work with you to design a plan that best fits your wishes. |
