Founded in 1932 with 42 charter members, including the University of Cincinnati, ARL was formed “to serve and represent the interests of libraries that are distinguished by the breadth and quality of their research-oriented collections as well as the characteristics and magnitude of the multidisciplinary communities they serve.” Today, ARL consists of 123 research To commemorate the 75th anniversary, ARL published Celebrating Research: Rare and Special Collections from the Membership of the Association of Research Libraries, a compilation of illustrated profiles of the rare and special collections of ARL members. The University of Cincinnati’s entry, “The William J. Lawrence Notebooks on the History of the Dublin Stage,” consists of 99 handwritten notebooks containing William J. Lawrence’s research on the Irish stage from 1630 to 1911. Along with Lawrence’s meticulous notes, the notebooks also contain programs, pamphlets, news clippings, images, and lists of actors. The notebooks are housed in the Archives and Rare Books Library where they are available for research and study.
