Over the course of working in the DAAP Library, Sarah has performed a myriad of tasks. For the first few years of her tenure, she worked primarily at the front desk, checking out books and reserve items and helping students find library materials. She enjoyed the interactions with users, getting to know students on a first-name basis. More recently, Sarah became more involved with the behind-the-scenes operations of the library – processing items for class reserves, assisting the head librarian with the ordering of library materials, cataloging images from the slide collection, using the Computer Graphics Center to create exhibit displays, and helping to train new staff. Sarah invites others to visit the DAAP Library and check out the many unique resources in the collection. On the main floor, for example, are graphic novels shelved on the New Book Shelf, elephant folios (rightfully named as they are very large books), and current magazines and journals with a range of subjects and titles such as Adbusters – one of Sarah’s favorites. On the 2nd floor of the library are small books and the rare book collection containing artists’ books – books that are themselves works of art. Sarah Maguire is one of five University Libraries 2008 Student Assistants of the Year and was chosen one of two recipients of the 2008 UC Student Employee of the Year for her work at the DAAP Library.
