The donated books were among those considered in 2007 for the American Library Association’s (ALA) Coretta Scott King Book Award and for ALA’s 2008 Notable Children’s Books citation. Dr. Henderson has served on the Coretta Scott King Book Award Jury since 2002, most recently as chair, and donated the 73 titles nominated for the award. The annual awards honor authors and illustrators whose works promote an understanding and appreciation of African-American culture and its contributions to the American Dream. Among the titles donated by Dr. Henderson to the CRC were 2007 award winners Copper Sun by Cincinnati author, Sharon Draper (book award winner), Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom by Carole Boston Weatherford and illustrated by Kadir Nelson (illustrator award winner), and Standing against the Wind by Traci L. Jones (“new talent” award winner). As a member of ALA’s Notable Children’s Books Committee, Dr. Henderson was sent approximately 1700 titles to review from major publishers of children’s books. ALA’s Web site defines a notable book as one: “Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to children’s books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage children’s interests in exemplary ways.” “It was a joy to give those books to strengthen the current CRC collection and in appreciation for the support CECH has given me during my term on the Coretta Scott King Book Award Jury and as its chair,” said Dr. Henderson. “What better place than the CRC Library. I think it’s a perfect match.”
