To celebrate Gabrielle’s inclusion in this compilation, the Libraries purchased two unbound copies of the work. Laura Carvantes, a long-time student assistant in the department, and Lucy Schultz, a volunteer in the department, each hand bound a copy. The colorful bindings feature paste paper made on-site and hot-stamped foil spine titles and showcase the techniques and skills both have learned under the direction of Gabrielle and the Preservation staff. Preservation Services will retain one of the copies for our working reference library and the other will be given to the Archives and Rare Book Library where the majority of Gabrielle’s conserved materials reside. |

This winter, Oak Knoll Press published a monograph compiled by Pamela Train Leutz containing 20 interviews with private practice book binders entitled The Thread that Binds. One of the featured artists is Cincinnati book binder and conservator Gabrielle Fox. In addition to running a robust private practice, Gabrielle works part-time in the Preservation Services Department of the University of Cincinnati Libraries. Gabrielle conserves rare book holdings and provides hands-on instruction to the department’s staff and student assistants.
