Francis Ott Allen, associate librarian, gave
a presentation about University Libraries’ German-Americana Collection
at the Germanists Discussion Group Meeting held June 27 in Orlando
Florida. In addition, Allen was reappointed by the Governor’s
Office to serve on the Ohioana Library Association Board of Trustees.
Ohioana’s current holdings include over 40,000 books, 10,000
pieces of sheet music, scrapbooks and biographical files on more
than 20,000 Ohio writers, artists, musicians and other notable
Ohioans. The books are written by Ohioans or are about Ohio or
Ohioans.
Ted Baldwin, College of Applied Science librarian, moderated
a roundtable discussion for corporate chemical information
professionals at the Special Libraries Association annual conference
held in June. Also attending the conference were Angela Gooden,
Geology-Mathematics-Physics librarian, and John Tebo, Chemistry-Biology
librarian.
Lorna Newman, government documents librarian, attended a week
long interagency seminar in June in Washington, D.C. hosted
by the Government Printing Office (GPO). The annual seminar
is an opportunity for new depository librarians to acquire
up-to-date information, discuss and exchange ideas with GPO
staff, and hear from federal agency representatives. Librarians
from around the country attended and had an overview of information
products and activities of numerous Federal Agencies as they
relate to Federal Depository Libraries. Participants were also
able to tour the GPO, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Copyright Office.
Melissa Cox Norris, director of library communications, presented “Marketing:
A New Way of Doing Business” at the Ohio Library Council’s
2004 Annual Conference held September 28 through October 1
in Cincinnati, OH.
Elizabeth Meyer, visual resources librarian, attended the
Summer Education Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management,
sponsored by the Art Libraries Society of North America and
the Visual Resources Association, July 6-10. The Institute
focused on managing an image collection in both analog and
digital formats.
Publishing
Kevin Grace, head of Archives & Rare Books,
and Jack Klumpe, retired Cinicnnati photographer, published
The Cincinnati Reds: 1950-1985. The images in the book document
Klumpe’s photographic
coverage of the Reds for over a quarter century (1950-1985)
as he followed the team from Spring Training to the World Series.
Notable players and personalities in the book include Joe Nuxhall,
Pete Rose, Sparky Anderson, and others who helped define baseball
in the Queen City.
