Ines Schilling Wins Library AwardDorian Love, Library Media Technical Services Assistant, Langsam Circulation and Interlibrary Services, dorian.love@uc.edu |
Ines Schilling, senior library associate in the serials department of Langsam Library, has been named the Winter Quarter recipient of University Libraries’ Quality Service Award.
Ines has worked for the university for over 35 years, with the past year spent in the serials department. Her primary responsibility is to catalog new serial titles and microfilms. Fluent in six languages, she often relies upon this knowledge to catalog incoming material. Ines states that her favorite language to work with is Russian because she “enjoys the challenge.” Taking on challenges is a main theme in Ines’s work and is the reason why she says she has stayed interested in her work for so long, “I appreciate the opportunities I have at University Libraries to continuously challenge myself to learn new skills and take on new tasks,” she said. Ines proved this in the fall when she took the initiative to catalog a large backlog of serials in microforms – a challenge not only in its sheer number of records, but also in that Ines had no prior experience cataloging this medium. In addition, the items contained many complexities that would further complicate getting them into a unified format. Ines was able to meet her December deadline with “excellent time management and an outstanding commitment to achieving the goal,” said one award nominator. Because of this accomplishment, “725 microfilm reels are now cataloged, searchable within the Library Catalog, and available for circulation through OhioLINK or ILL.” One of her many nominators said her work on this project “reflects her commitment to the Libraries’ mission to provide excellent research collections. She has demonstrated a high standard of expertise, collaboration, and efficiency in pursuit of the completion of this project.” Ines was also recognized for her collegial spirit. As one nominator said, “Ines exemplifies the vision and values of University Libraries’ Strategic Plan. While she has a great deal of knowledge in her field, she is always eager to teach, train, and share that knowledge with all staff.” Ines says she truly loves coming to work every day and is happy to be a part of providing information that others can see and use. She takes pride in the quality of her work, but notes that her successes would not be possible without the teamwork and the sharing of knowedge that is a constant among those in her department. Ines would like to express her thanks and gratitude to those who came to her award reception and who have supported her from afar. The Quality Service Award recognizes the fine work of University Libraries’ staff who strive to provide the best service to both library users as well as to colleagues. The award is presented three times per academic year. |
