This quarter’s Quality Service Award goes to the “dynamic Barb Macke.” Anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Barb knows how well deserved this award is.
Barb began her University Libraries’ career as the self-professed “oldest intern ever” at the Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning Library and the Classics Library. She joined the department previously called Training and Educational Services (now Reference and Instructional Services) in 2002. Before obtaining her library degree, Barb worked for 20 years in retail at a paint company she and her husband own. She says that when you own your own business “service is critical,” and she applies that commitment to her work in University Libraries. Anyone who has witnessed Barb working with a student can see her open and engaging manner. Barb is very proactive in her approach to service and “is able to recognize the ‘look’ of a student who needs help,” said one of her nominators for this award. Barb strives to make a positive impact on students’ perception of libraries. One of Barb’s nominators illustrates this by writing, “Barb makes the students feel like the Libraries are welcoming and well-equipped to help them.” And help them she does…Barb taught almost 40 classes last quarter alone. Anyone who has sat in on one of them can see how dedicated Barb is to providing quality service to students. Barb spreads her enthusiasm to her coworkers as well. Barb volunteers regularly for Welcome Week, Freshmen Orientation, and the Student Appreciation Party, among other initiatives and committees. She currently serves on the Undergraduate Services Team where she is playing a pivotal role in developing freshman core competencies. The Quality Service Award recognizes the fine work of University Libraries staff who strive to provide the best service to both library users as well as to colleagues. The award is presented three times per academic year. |
