| German-Americana Collection Curator Don Heinrich Tolzmann is currently paging through German-language newspapers from the 1850s and 60s that were recently contributed to the university by Volker Rieser who taught German before he retired from Cincinnati Public Schools. One of the newspapers, written in German, was printed in Reading, PA, for Pennsylvania-German readers. Tolzmann said he is particularly interested in a German-Methodists newspaper that was produced in Cleveland during the Civil War. “I’m interested to see what they contain about the war, abolition, and slavery,” Tolzmann said. “German-Americans were strong opponents to the institution of slavery and supported the Union case very strongly.” University Libraries’ German-Americana Collection celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2004. Established in 1974, Tolzmann said the collection, now totaling more than 10,000 items, includes gifts contributed from the community and around the nation. The collection consists of books, pamphlets, documents, newspapers, and manuscripts pertaining to German-American history, literature, and culture, with contributions from the nation’s three key German-American heritage centers: Cincinnati, Milwaukee, and St. Louis. The German-Americana Collection is available for study and research in the Archives and Rare Books Department located in 808 Blegen Library. |
