A Note from the DeanVictoria A. Montavon, Dean and University Librarian |
Once again the front page of the spring issue of Source is reserved for a feature article about “Authors, Editors & Composers” and deservedly so. This annual event is an energizing occasion at which we renew connections with faculty from across the University who have made it a habit to share their publications with our libraries on an annual basis. We also welcome newcomers to this celebration each year, one of whom was an adjunct faculty member who pointed out her first-time entry in the exhibit with obvious pride. President Nancy L. Zimpher’s introductory remarks about the importance of research were greeted by enthusiasm as was her later participation in the program as one of our featured “authors and editors” for her 2004 publication.
Other highlights to recall in University Libraries as this academic year draws to an end are the two milestones we reached during the Fall Quarter: the acquisition of our 3,000,000th volume and the 75th anniversary of our designation as a Federal Depository Library. Just two weeks ago we received more good news with the announcement of our latest ranking in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). We have sustained our “top 50” goal by achieving the rank of #47 this year for the UC library group comprised of University Libraries, the Law Library, and the Medical Center Libraries. This is a distinction to savor in the company of the 113 U.S. and Canadian research university libraries of ARL. I know many readers of Source were invited this spring to participate in the LibQUAL survey, which assesses the services provided by University Libraries. Thank you for taking the time to respond to this online survey. We will receive the results this summer and look forward to sharing them with you in the fall issue of Source. Best wishes for an enjoyable summer – and congratulations to our UC graduates! |
