A Note from the DeanVictoria A. Montavon, Dean and University Librarian |
As you read this issue of Source, I hope you will be struck, as I am, by the richness of new and re-examined collections in University Libraries and the infinite ways they can connect us with the past and point us to the future. We begin with something new that is old, a collection from almost a century ago. I never tire of seeing the lovely Paoletta who graces the front page of this newsletter and know we made the right choice of this Cincinnati-commissioned opera as our treasured 3,000,000th volume. The music theme continues with the selection of UC as the permanent home of the Dale Warland Singers Collection. Although that outstanding professional chorus will no longer exist as a performing group, it will live on through its scores, recordings, and archives thanks to the special efforts of Doug Lowry, Earl Rivers, Mark Palkovic, and Kevin Grace, and, of course, the generosity of Dale Warland himself who has entrusted us with the historic records of his musical legacy.
Knowing that our students are drawn to all that is digital, it is especially satisfying to note the keen interest of students for the printed page, book design, and conservation as a result of the new honors course taught by Jane Carlin and Barbara Wenner: “The Printed Page: From Victorian to Virtual.” Going back further in time to the 17th century, we find that an early volume in our highly regarded Oesper History of Chemistry Collection enabled William Jensen, Professor of Chemistry, to solve a portrait mystery thanks to his own sharp eye for detail and the investigative assistance of librarian John Tebo and his staff. Finally, the column “Recent Library Acquisitions” rounds out this glimpse of the many gems to be found across our libraries, with accounts of 17th-century scientific experiments, primary materials about Cincinnati’s first female mayor, Bobbie Sterne, and new online resources that greatly increase the breadth of our access to key journal titles and The Times (London). We hope one of these resources will pique your interest and draw you into a library or database outside your usual neighborhood – real or virtual. |
