University Libraries Honors UC's Authors, Editors & Composers

A record 355 works were submitted by 228 faculty members for inclusion in the celebration. This year’s honorees represented every college at the university plus four units.

The works were diverse in scope, medium, even language. In addition to English, works were published in Spanish, German, French, Japanese, and Bengali.

There were numerous articles by teams, such as one by UC College of Medicine’s Andres Gelrud, along with several outside colleagues, titled “Cystic Fibrosis is Associated with Abnormalities in Fatty Acid Metabolism,” published in the New England Journal of Medicine. There were many books such as College of Applied Science professor Marion Brown’s A Finnish Immigrant Son in the Great War, 1918-1919.

While most works fall in the category of books and journal articles, works of art were also well represented as were musical scores. A complete bibliography of the submitted works is available online and as a pdf.

“Our library faculty, staff, and Friends group eagerly anticipate ‘Authors, Editors & Composers’ each year as the ideal opportunity to express our pride and appreciation for UC’s faculty,” said Victoria A. Montavon, Dean and University Librarian and host of the reception. This year’s event included remarks from four featured authors, editors and composers:

• Terry Boling, Assistant Professor, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), presented a slide show of his architecture project, Wyoming Loft Addition. The loft is the first component of the renovation of a bungalow in the Cincinnati suburb of Wyoming. All construction work on the project was done by Boling with teams of present and former DAAP students.
• Relva C. Buchanan, Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering, edited the book Ceramic Materials for Electronics (Materials Engineering). Addressing the needs of those who develop, design, and construct electrical ceramic parts and components, Buchanan summarized the latest trends and advances in ceramic materials for electronics and provided details on the properties, characterization, fabrication, and applications of a wide range of ceramic materials.
• UC President Emeritus Henry R. Winkler served as president of UC from 1977-84 and remains an active scholar at the university. With his book British Labour Seeks a Foreign Policy, 1900-1940, he presents a synthesis of an area of research he has pursued throughout his career.
• UC President Nancy L. Zimpher spoke about university leadership in Urban School Renewal, the book she edited with Kenneth R. Howey, UC Research Professor in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services.

After the program, event attendees were invited to view an exhibit of 180 of the celebrated works. The works are now on public display in Langsam Library’s 4th and 5th floor lobbies through June 12, 2005.

“Authors, Editors & Composers” is sponsored by the Friends of University Libraries. This group of library donors supports University Libraries in providing excellent research collections and quality service to the University of Cincinnati community. In addition to “Authors, Editors & Composers,” the Friends also fund exhibits and a public lecture series that increases awareness of library collections.
