Presentations

Rosemary A. Franklin, Associate Senior Librarian, presented "The Problematic Learning-Object" at the Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) Conference on June 1, 2005, in Dubrovnik, Croatia. LIDA is an international conference co-sponsored by Rutgers University, the University of Finland, University of Osijek, and the European Chapter of the American Sociaty for Information Science (ASIS).

Barb Macke, Instruction Librarian, and Jane Carlin, Coordinator of Instruction, presented a one-day workshop on enriching library instruction through active learning for the librarians of the Maricopa Community College System, Phoenix, Arizona, January 13, 2006.

Presentations were made on November 4 at the 31st annual Academic Library Association of Ohio Conference, "Setting the Stage: New Roles in the Library":

Pam Bach, Head of Langsam Library’s Info Commons, was one of four panelists who shared best practices and lessons learned on instituting an Information Commons: "Information Commons: Tips from the Stage Crew for Future Productions."

Pam Bach, Head of Langsam Library’s Info Commons, and Barb Macke, Instruction Librarian, co-presented a session: "A Natural Fit: Librarians and Learner-Centered Pedagogies." Participants experienced a problem-based library session and learned how to create collaborative learning assignments.

Conference Participation

Cheryl Albrecht, Associate Dean of Public Services, and Jane Carlin, Coordinator of Instruction, attended the Living the Future Conference held in April 5-8 at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Ted Baldwin, Head of the College of Applied Science Library, attended the Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium in Chicago, IL, December 5-6, 2005. This event provided a unique forum for librarians from all types of settings to learn about the "gaming generation" and to discuss how libraries can best serve and instruct these users.

Publications

Olga Hart, Instruction Librarian in Reference and Instructional Services, wrote two chapters, “Standard Features of Electronic Databases” and “Internet Applications and Their Use for Research”, in Information Literacy Course Handbook for Distance and In-class Learners published in 2006 by Library Instruction Publications.

Don Heinrich Tolzmann, Curator of the German-Americana Collection, published German Cincinnati by Arcadia Publishing.

Awards

Angela Gooden, Head of the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library, is one of three recipients of the Diversity Leadership Development Award to be given out this June by the Special Libraries Association (SLA) for her work in promoting diversity in SLA.

Don Heinrich Tolzmann, Curator of the German-Americana Collection, received a Special Award of Commendation from the Concordia Historical Institute, St. Louis, for his book, Missouri’s German Heritage (Little Miami Pub. Co., 2004), which, according to the Institute, provides "an understanding of social, economic, and religious factors surrounding emigration from the Old Country to the New World that enhances the study of Lutherans who settled in America." Recipients of the award also received the Luther Medal.
