A Note from the DeanVictoria A. Montavon, Dean and University Librarian |
Once again the Fall Quarter is the season for celebrations at University Libraries, starting with our special Welcome Week event for new students. Having put more than 3,900 new students through their “library orientation” paces in June and July, we decided we should take a lighter approach when they came to campus this fall – and treat them to free ice cream. One of our creative librarians suggested the “Scoop City Ice Cream Truck,” an ArtWorks project that features a brightly decorated purple van complete with ice cream truck music and personable driver. We brought the truck to the Langsam Library Plaza and stationed friendly staff at strategic locations to encourage students to drop by for a delicious ice cream treat. They came and enjoyed. We offered to answer any library questions they might have, but we think the ice cream was the main attraction that day. Many readers will recall the two library milestones we celebrated in Fall 2004: our 75th year as a Federal Depository Library and the acquisition of our 3,000,000th volume. We have two additional historic highlights in the life of our libraries to celebrate this fall: the 75th anniversary of Blegen Library and the dedication of the Chemistry-Biology Library’s Else L. Schulze Info Commons and The Oesper Collections in the History of Chemistry. In their cover-page article, Kevin Grace, Don Heinrich Tolzmann, and Anna Heran provide great insight into the history and architecture of the Blegen Library, from its beginnings to today. This is a building whose architectural plans drew the notice of The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1928: “The dignified simplicity and spaciousness of the new library are apparent. It is expected to take its place among the most beautiful buildings in Cincinnati.” Through our collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biological Sciences we decided it was time to draw public attention to the major enhancements we have recently achieved in the Chemistry-Biology Library. On October 5th the dedication of the very fine instructional and teaching facility, the Else L. Schulze Info Commons, and the rich and unique Oesper Collections in the History of Chemistry attracted an enthusiastic crowd of students, faculty, emeriti faculty, friends, and donors. |
