Debuting this fall, the newly redesigned Student Technology Resources Center (STRC) will provide an open, comfortable, and high-tech environment in the center of Langsam Library's fourth floor for students to work on an array of technology projects. First opened in 2002, the STRC is designed to help students with their instructional technology needs. Students across the university from almost every college and numerous classes have used the STRC to create websites and online presentations, to work with digital editing, or just to add that extra something to an assignment. Last year alone, students made over 500 videos using the STRC's equipment and drawing on staff expertise. The newly redesigned space is intended to bring STRC services front and center on the main floor of Langsam Library.
As in the past, the renovated STRC will include 10 computer stations where students may work independently or in small groups to design web pages using Dreamweaver, MS Publisher, or html; create CDs or DVDs; scan images and work with Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, InDesign, and MS imaging; create presentations in PowerPoint or Flash; and prepare electronic theses and dissertations. New to the redesign will be a Video Production Studio complete with green screen capabilities where students may record themselves and others for placement onto any background. They may then use the Alienware high-end PCs with technology for digital video editing. As with the former STRC, library staff and student workers are available to assist with the technology, software, or simply to provide some needed encouragement. Adjacent to the STRC will be the Adaptive Technology Office where students, faculty, and staff with disabilities have access to adaptive equipment for use in accessing and using library resources. Available equipment includes JAWS and Dragon Speak software, a Braille embosser, and a Reading Edge reading machine. The Adaptive Technology Office and equipment are available for use any time Langsam Library is open. Assistance is provided via the Langsam Info Commons desk. Construction began on the STRC and Adaptive Technology Office in May and is scheduled for completion later in August, just in time for the start of the fall semester. Equipment for the STRC and the Adaptive Technology Office is funded primarily by Information and Technology Instructional Equipment (ITIE) fees.
