AwardsJennifer Krivickas, head of the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), won the Librarian of the Year award at the second annual SWONNY Awards Gala. The award recognizes "a professional librarian for outstanding achievement and accomplishment towards building an empowered and dynamic community of 21st-century libraries in the SWON Libraries region, including a role in advocacy and education to advance the continued relevance of libraries in our society." Jen's nominator said that "Jen's energy and ability to relate to current trends and culture has given her a unique ability to steer the DAAP Library in new directions." She was recognized for her work in the joint venture between the DAAP Library and the College's Computer Graphics Center, which resulted in the creation of a Mac Lab in the DAAP Library. Conference ParticipationSusan Banoun, head of the Electronic Services Department; Karl Hiller, IT analyst; Ben Kline, assistant director of Circulation and Multimedia Services; Lorna Newman, head of Interlibrary Services and Government Documents; and John Stork, assistant director of Circulation and Multimedia Services attended the Innovative Users Group annual conference in Chicago, April 16-18. Katrina Bowling-Bergman, public and technical services supervisor in the Chemistry-Biology Library, was selected to participate in Library Leadership Ohio 2012, held July 25-27. Sponsored by The State Library of Ohio, OHIONET, and the Ohio Library Council, the mission of Library Leadership Ohio is "to develop future leaders for Ohio libraries, to help Ohio library staff become leaders in the communities they serve and to encourage Ohio librarians to work collaboratively." Participants were selected based on their demonstrated leadership potential, communication skills, initiative, a commitment to the profession, and a forward thinking approach to problem solving. Stephanie Bricking, Albert B. Sabin archivist, presented a poster titled "The Albert B. Sabin Digitization Project: Balancing Restrictions and Privacy with Access" at the student poster session at the Midwest Archives Conference on April 21. Jim Cummins, curator of the George Elliston Poetry Collection, attended the Associate Writing Programs conference in Chicago, February 29-March 3, and wrote about his experience for the Best American Poetry blog. Kevin Grace, university archivist and head of the Archives and Rare Books Library; Doris Haag, director of the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions; Laura Laugle, Henry Heimlich Archivist; and Stephanie Bricking; Albert B. Sabin archivist, presented "We Look at Giants: The University of Cincinnati Archival Grant Projects" at the Society of Ohio Archivists' annual conference on May 18. John Tebo, head of the Chemistry-Biology Library, and Ted Baldwin, head of the College of Engineering and Applied Science Library, attended the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) from February 16-20 in Vancouver, B.C. This year's theme was particularly relevant to the interests of research libraries: "Flattening the World: Building a Global Knowledge Society." Degree AwardedJanice Schulz, records manager in the Archives and Rare Books Library, was awarded a BA in history from UC in December. PublicationsStephanie Bricking, Albert B. Sabin archivist; Linda Newman, digital projects coordinator; and Stephen Marine, assistant dean for Special Collections; wrote "Making Dr. Sabin Accessible for All" published in the Spring 2012 issue of the Ohio Archivist.
