Barb Macke, Instruction Librarian in the Reference and Instructional Services Department, was awarded the Winter 2012 Quality Service Initiative Award for her exceptional service to library users, undergraduate students, and UC faculty, particularly those teaching writing courses in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. As one nominator stated, "The library tutorial programs Barb provides are invaluable opportunities for my students to learn or brush up on their research skills and their use of the UC library system." Barb constantly works to stay abreast of best practices in pedagogy and then develops creative programs to engage students in their course assignments. She regularly offers dozens of classroom instruction sessions each year, as well as creates workshops for faculty and conference presentations for her colleagues. Barb has also been a leader in creating LibGuides and training others to write them in order to provide increased access to the Libraries' collections. One colleague says of her work, "Barb has remarkable determination and ability to make things happen. She has contributed significantly to creating a positive image of UC Libraries on campus and beyond." The Quality Service Award recognizes the fine work of University of Cincinnati Libraries staff members who strive to provide the best service to library users, as well as colleagues. The award is presented three times per academic year.
