In 2011-12, work continued with several members of the DAAP faculty as well as Cincinnati gallery owner Michael Lowe to identify and acquire key publications that further develop the focus of the library's Special Collections and to more fully integrate their use into DAAP's curriculum. One significant, recent acquisition is a limited edition of Josef Albers' Interaction of Color. The rich, elegant screen-printed plates demonstrate how context changes the hue and, therefore, the 'feel' of color. The DAAP Library copy is housed in a slipcase with a large number of 'demonstration' screen-printed plates. DAAP Library Exhibition News
"Charley Harper in Print," an exhibition co-curated by DAAP Library stafff and the curator of the Charley Harper estate, Chip Doyle, was organized in coordination with "Charley Harper: A Bird's Eye View," a retrospective exhibition held in the Dorothy W. and C. Lawson Jr. Reed Gallery at the College of DAAP. From April 20 through May 15, the Library hosted "Architecture and Vision: From Pyramids to Spacecraft," an exhibition that accompanied a lecture by visiting scholars Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler. The exhibition was organized by DAAP Library staff, and co-curated by DAAP School of Architecture and Interior Design faculty member Brian Davies, and the Consulate of Italy in Cleveland and Detroit and the Consulate of Switzerland in Cleveland. The traveling exhibition displayed selected projects by the design studio Architecture and Vision, founded by Italian architect Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andreas Vogler who have offices in Munich, Germany and Bomarzo, Italy.

5mm slides were once a key component in the teaching and research of design, architecture, art, and planning. However, due to technological advances, the slide collection is now more a relic than a research collection. Therefore, the library has embarked upon a large-scale analysis of the slide collection to determine what is already available in digital format (via ARTstor & Luna); and if not, what can be digitized. Over the course of the academic year, over 17,000 slides of the 150,000+ piece collection were assessed. The results of the collection analysis, as well as plans for the slide collection, will be shared soon.
The DAAP Library Media Collection continues to evolve. In close consultation with DAAP School of Art faculty member Charlie Woodman, a full review of the DAAP Library's VHS holdings has begun with the goal of removing all VHS from the collection and replacing each with a digital or DVD version. DAAP lectures formerly on VHS have already been migrated to DVDs.
The DAAP Library kicked off the 2011-12 academic year with an exhibition focused on the Historic Terrace Plaza Hotel. The exhibition, co-curated by Elizabeth Meyer, visual resources librarian, and UC architecture alumnus Stewart Shillito Maxwell, focused on Cincinnati's Terrace Plaza, America's first international-style hotel designed and constructed in 1948 by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, LLP. A corresponding collection of Terrace Plaza plans is available online at
As a special treat this year, there was an exhibition of hand-sculpted jewelry by artist Lynne Meyers Gordon. The exhibition, entitled "Wearable Sculpture in Precious Metals," featured hand-sculpted original designs by Lynne Meyers Gordon, M.F.A., a Pendleton Art Center artist and dedicated patron of the arts.
