Conference ParticipationTed Baldwin, Head of the College of Applied Science Library, attended the Learning, Libraries, and Technology conference in Columbus, OH, March 2 and 3, 2009. This conference was presented by the University System of Ohio, and focused on transformative technologies in higher education, particularly those serving distance learners. Olga Hart, Instruction Librarian, Meredith Orlowski, Research Associate in the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, and Debbie Tenofsky, Head of Reference and Instructional Services, presented at the United States Institute for Theater Technology (USITT) Annual Conference held March 18-21, 2009, in Cincinnati, OH. The presentation was an overview of Web 2.0 technologies and examples of how these could be used in teaching and stage production. Ben Kline, Project Supervisor in the Circulation and Multimedia Services Department in the Walter C. Langsam Library, presented “Using Web Management Reports for Circulation Work Measurement & Assessment” at the annual Innovative Users Group Conference in Anaheim, CA, May 17-20, 2009. On March 12-15, 2009, several UC librarians attended the 14th National Conference of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) in Seattle, WA. The conference theme was “Pushing the Edge: Explore, Engage, Extend!” Reference and Instructional Services Librarians Pam Bach, Olga Hart, and Barb Macke, together with former UC librarian Jane Carlin, led the round-table discussion: “Diversity and Pedagogy: Why Is It So Hard to Talk About Race, Gender, and Ethnicity in the Classroom?”
On April 17 and 18, 2009, UC’s College of Applied Science hosted the T3 Conference for math and science teachers who want to incorporate technology more into their classrooms. At this conference, the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services (CECH) Library’s NASA Educator Resource Center had a booth promoting available resources and services of the center. The NASA Educator Resource Center offers free teaching materials including teaching guides, posters, lithographs, and bookmarks – all free to educators and to the public. ServiceArlene Johnson, Head of Circulation and Multimedia Services Department in the Walter C. Langsam Library, is the 2008-2009 Co-Chair of the “Using Measurement Data for Library Planning, Assessment, and Communication Committee” of the Measurement, Assessment, and Evaluation Section of the Library Leadership & Management Association (LLAMA) Division of the American Library Association. In addition, she is the 2009 Chair of the “Circulation/Access Services Committee” of the Systems and Services Section of the Library Leadership & Management Association (LLAMA) Division of the American Library Association.
Special ProjectsJohn Borntrager, Research Associate in the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, and Debbie Tenofsky, Head of Reference and Instructional Services, assisted with the Higher Learning Commission accreditation of the University April 27-29, 2009. They created and organized the resource room at TUC that the evaluators used as evidence of UC’s academic, financial, and student environment. Patrick Schmude, Conservation Technician in Preservation Services, used his skills to create a hand-bound photo album commemorating Nancy Zimpher’s tenure as UC’s 25th president. The album was presented to Dr. Zimpher at an April 28th farewell reception wishing her well as she leaves UC to become chancellor of the State University of New York system. |
