Katrina Bowling-Bergman, Student Supervisor and Circulation Desk Manager in the Ralph E. Oesper Chemistry-Biology Library, was named the Spring Quarter 2009 recipient of the Libraries Quality Service Award. Among the reasons cited for bestowing this honor on Katrina were her efforts to streamline work processes, her high degree of initiative, and her dedication to providing quality service to library users. Two recent examples of Katrina’s commitment to providing quality service were cited in her nomination for this award. The first example involved the Chemistry-Biology Library’s much used Else Schulze Info Commons area. Glitches in the computers’ specialized software were causing malfunctions in some of the machines. Katrina worked with Library IT to keep the computers running as well as possible while the problems were resolved so that access was maintained at this important service point. The second example of Katrina’s commitment to service was how she filled in upon the retirement of a fellow Chemistry-Biology Library staff member. For six months until a replacement was hired, Katrina was one of only two full-time staff members working in the library. Because of her reliability and commitment to providing quality service, Katrina was given more responsibility during this time, which she handled expertly. Katrina’s nominator described her as being approachable, accurate, and accountable – all tenets of quality service. The Quality Service Award recognizes the fine work of UC Libraries staff who strive to provide the best possible service to library users as well as to colleagues. The award is presented three times per academic year.
