Sharon Downing: Forty Years of Providing Quality ServiceMelissa Cox Norris, Director of Library Communication |
||
Over the course of her 40-year career in the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) Library, Sharon Downing has performed nearly every duty that exists in a specialized library and has done so with extraordinary competence and enthusiasm. It is because of this commitment to her job as Music Cataloging Assistant in the CCM Library that Sharon was awarded the Fall Quarter University of Cincinnati Libraries Quality Service Award. Sharon’s day-to-day job responsibilities include cataloging, serials checking, proofing binding tickets, and binding. In addition, she hires, appoints, and trains students who work at the CCM Library service desk. All of this she does with approachability (“her door is always open”), accuracy (“she is meticulous in her work and has an excellent eye for detail”), and accountability (“she fulfills her job duties and follows through on new or special assignments”). Sharon is also being recognized for making work processes more efficient. In fall 2002, she lobbied to have specialized software installed in the CCM Library that would allow her to enter binding requests directly into the system. Prior to this change, requests were typed by someone in the CCM Library only to be re-keyed by someone else into the system. Considering that nearly 70% of the CCM Library’s print collection requires binding, Sharon’s efforts resulted in great efficiencies and an improved workflow. When this software was updated recently, Sharon quickly and easily adapted to this newest version. The Quality Service Award recognizes the fine work of Libraries staff who strive to provide the best service to library users as well as to colleagues. The award is presented three times per year.
