RefWorks’ Attachment feature helps you manage your full text articles
The RefWorks attachment feature enables account holders to attach files to their RefWorks references. This feature is particularly useful for managing full text articles. The process is relatively simple. After you add references to your RefWorks database, simply retrieve and save the full text from either the database from which you originally retrieved the references or by selecting the

icon in RefWorks. Either way, once you attach the saved full text record (file) to the corresponding RefWorks reference you will have instant and convenient access to your full text article from within RefWorks.
See the instructions below for managing your attachments. (There is a 5MB limit per file and a 100MB limit per user.)
Adding a file to an existing reference:
- From within RefWorks find the reference to which you wish to add full text and select [Edit]
- In the Attachments field, click on the [Browse] button to locate and select the file you wish to add
- Click on the [Add Attachment] button to attach the file to the RefWorks reference
- That’s it; you’re done. You don’t even need to save the reference unless you edited other parts of the reference.
Adding a file to a new manually added reference:
- From within RefWorks select [References] from the RefWorks menu bar and then select “Add New Reference.”
- Enter the appropriate bibliographic information into the “new reference” form.
- Click on the [Save Reference] button to save the reference. (You must “save” a reference before RefWorks will allow you to attach a file to it.)
- Repeat steps 2 – 4 above to attach your full text file to the reference.
Viewing Attachments:
You can select and view an attachment from a list of references or from the view or edit modes of a single reference. With the list display, references with attachments will show a paperclip above the reference. Single references will show a thumbnail icon of the attachment.
- To view an attachment from a list of references, click on the View link above the reference. .
- Click on the thumbnail icon to view the attachment. (You must have the appropriate software on your computer to view the attachment file type, e.g., Acrobat Reader to view a PDF file.)
Deleting Attachments:
File space for attachments is limited. There is a 5MB limit per file and a 100MB limit per user. You may, therefore, have occasion to delete attachments you no longer need. To delete an attachment:
- Find the reference for which you wish to delete an attachment and select [Edit].
- Click on the “Delete” option located above the attachment thumbnail icon.
- Click on [OK] to confirm this action.
