T he Directory of Open Access Journals provides free access to scientific and scholarly journals. Open access is defined as access to journals that use a funding model that does not charge either the readers or their institutions for access. These journals exercise peer-review or editorial quality control, and they report primary results of research, or they provide overviews of research results to the academic community. This particular site lists "sociology" journals. From this site you can click on "Find journals" to return to the page with all subjects. Clicking on "Social Sciences" will disclose discipline related to sociology, e.g., anthropology, psychology, gender studies and social sciences. |

Galaxy was launched in January 1994, it was the first searchable Internet directory. Created as part of the Einet division at the MCC Research Consortium at the University of Texas, Austin, the original initiative was to develop tools for large-scale directory services to support electronic commerce. Presently, Galaxy is owned by Fox News and America's Health Network. Galaxy attempts to identify and index contextually sites for a wide range of topics, academic and popular. Information is compiled and organized by human Internet Librarians. This approach allows for focus on depth of coverage within defined subjects as well as the exclusion of Internet sites that are offensive, incomplete or poorly maintained. The Sociology site is divided into 20 subcategories. |

The WWW Virtual Library alleges to be the oldest catalog of the web, started by Tim Berners-Lee. It is run by a loose confederation of volunteers. These volunteers compile pages of key links for their areas of expertise. This site is a subdivision for sociology. The page was last updated on January 1, 2002. Though many of the links from this site are no longer active, many more are, and the site continues to be of value. The WWW VL lists sites for departments of sociology, associations, directories of resources, discussion lists, research centers, databases, software resources and sites for theories of major sociologists. |

Description: |
The Educational Rankings Annual (ERA), an annual publication, is a very interesting compilation of myriad rankings in the area of education. Ranking information about educational institutions, faculty, library facilities and hundreds of other educational phenomena in the ERA are usually abridged. However, all the rankings' entries in ERA identify the source of information from which more data may usually be obtained. The ERA, therefore, serves as an index to sources of more complete ranking information. For example, one entry (#1942) shows the University of Cincinnati as the leading institution for publishing the most articles in top rated criminology/criminal justice journals for the period of 1995 to 1999, and of course the journal source is identified for the reader's inspection. |
