The Biographical Dictionary provides over 28,000 biographies of historical and contemporary individuals. The major advantage of this resource is its comprehensive coverage and versatile search options. The dictionary can be searched by birth years, death years, positions held, professions, literary and artistic works, achievements, and other keywords. Further, the dictionary offers truncation and boolean searching, e.g. The shortcoming of this resource, however, is the amount of biographical information provided for each entry. In most instances very little, a line or two, biographical information is given. The database also includes a search link to barnsandnoble.com to locate books and other media about the biographee. |

Description: |
Modeled after "The Dead Poets' Society" (the movie) this site provides an index to 16 major contributors to sociology. Ten additional sociology icons will be added soon. The site contains three major components: the "Dead Sociologists' Index," the "Dead Sociologists' Gallery" and the "Dead Sociologists" Links" area. The Dead Sociologists' Index provides access to biographical information about each sociologist, a summary of that sociologists' theories, a photograph and a listing of their orignial works. The Dead Sociologists' Gallery provides access to thumbnail and enlarged photographs of each sociologist. The Links area (accessible via the Dead Sociologists' Index page) provides access to additional links of popular topical areas in sociology as well as links to a small list of publishers of sociology materials and graduate departments of sociology offering PhD programs. |

Wikipedia is not exclusively dedicated to sociology. However, this free electronic encyclopedia does include a substantial amount of information on the history of sociology, its major branches and specialized areas, dozens of sociologists, key sociological topics, sociological methodology and other related fields, e.g. criminology, gender and racism. Wikipedia is an open source encyclopedia supported by the Wikipedia Foundation. Articles are written collaboratively by contributors all over the world. Wikipedia includes a comprehensive set of guidelines and policies for contributors. All articles are rich with links. Unfortunately, there is no indication of the contributor or their credentials. Therefore, use this encyclopedia with a critical eye. |
