Article Databases
Bibliographies are listings of materials on a specific topic arranged according to some organized plan (alphabetical, chronological, classified). Annotated bibliographies provide a brief description of the item being cited. Some bibliographies list books, journal articles, and documents. Others may be more limited in coverage
Here are some basic political science bibliographies that every student of the discipline should know:
Catalog of U.S. Government Publications 1994- Connect
“The catalog provides an index to print and electronic publications created by Federal agencies. When available, links are provided to the full-text of these publications.” Use in conjunction with GPO Monthly Catalog 1976- Connect and Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications (title varies) Langsam Reference Z1223 .A18. These publications do not index journal articles but will cite any serial issued as a government publication. Columbia International Affairs Online 1991- Connect
CIAO is designed to provide comprehensive coverage of theory and research. The full text database includes working papers, books, journals, policy briefs, and case studies.
GalleryWatch.com(Federal) 2003- Connect
GalleryWatch.com provides full text access to all numbered Congressional Research Service documents since 2003 and indexes Congressional Research Service reports since 1995. Use Major Studies and Issue Briefs of the Congressional Research Service and its index in Langsam Reference (Ref JK1108.M352) to access this material from 1977 to 1995 and 2003 respectively.
IBZ 1983- Connect
This international, interdisciplinary bibliography of periodical literature has been published since 1896. Older issues are in Reference or in storage. The IBZ is useful for locating articles in the periodical publications of countries for which there is little bibliographic control. Access through the Article Resources section of the library’s home page, where the IBZ is called International Bibliography of Periodical Literature.

London Bibliography of the Social Sciences… 46 vols. 1934-1984

This resource is an international listing of books, pamphlets, and documents arranged by subjects. It includes the holdings of the British Library of Political and Economic Science. The London Bibliography of the Social Sciences was absorbed by the International Bibliography of Political Science in 1989.
Major Studies and Issue Briefs of the Congressional Research Service 1977-
The contents of these bibliographies are separately cataloged in uclid under this uniform title. There is also a published index in the reference collection (Reference JK1108.M352). These are bibliographies compiled as background briefs for members of Congress. They tend to relate to matters of immediate domestic or foreign policy concern. PAIS International 1972- Connect
PAIS International covers economic and social issues, especially topics that are or may become the subject of legislation. The bibliography includes books, journal articles, pamphlets, and government documents and is multilingual. PAIS Archive Connect covers the years 1915-1976.
Indexes to the journal literature are important research tools for the political scientist and are the means by which systematic access to the contents of periodicals may be obtained. Abstracts offer a brief summary of the contents of the journal article cited.

This general index provides full text coverage of a large segment of journal publishing in the social sciences, including political science.
British Humanities Index 1962- Connect
This index also covers the social sciences in British journals. It provides strong coverage of political events but none of theory or analysis. For articles written between 1915/1916 and 1961 use The Subject Index to Periodicals Langsam Reference AI3.A72.
Communication and Mass Media Complete 1915- Connect
This database includes some full text articles. It is useful for topics relating to political communication.
Communication Studies: A Sage Full-Text Collection 1982- Connect
This resource includes the full text of articles from Sage-published journals in communication studies. It is especially useful for public opinion topics and political communication.
CPI.Q 1988- Connect
This database offers indexing since 1988 and full text since 1995 to Canadian periodical publications. Selected articles from the Globe & Mail are full text beginning in 1997.
Expanded Academic ASAP 1980- Connect
This database contains current events coverage. It is partially full text.
Index to Current Urban Documents Connect
Strictly speaking this is not an index to articles but rather an index to “…the reports and research that are generated by local government agencies, civic organizations, academic and research organizations, public libraries, and metropolitan and regional planning agencies in approximately 500 selected cities in the United States and Canada.”
International Political Science Abstracts 1989- Connect
Produced by the International Political Science Association, this online database indexes and abstracts the most important journals in the field published anywhere in the world. .
JSTOR Connect
This database provides retrospective full text coverage of major political science journals. Dates of coverage vary from journal to journal.

LexisNexis Academic Connect
This database provides full text coverage of major newspapers and magazines as well as State Profiles, Biographical Information, Reference & Directories Law Reviews, and Federal Case Law. Use in conjunction with Factive Connect for newspaper articles.
LexisNexis Congressional Connect
This source offers full text coverage of congressional reports, documents, prints, bills and the Congressional Record. Also includes prepared statements and selected Q&A transcripts in addition to public laws and the United States Code, the Federal Register, and the Code of Federal Regulations. Additional items of interest include biographical information, voting records, and financial information.
LexisNexis Environmental Connect
This is a full text database that includes Environment Abstracts. It also retrieves full-text news items, journal articles and reference materials in addition to federal and state codes and federal agency regulations. Also included are case law and agency decisions at both the state and federal levels.
LexisNexis Statistical Connect
This full text resource offers statistical tables as well as summaries from statistical publications and links to statistical web sites.
OxResearch 1986- Connect
This database provides “… succinct analytical articles covering world and regional economic and political developments of major significance. Evaluates issues and events within a coherent political, social, and economic framework. Contains objective, multi-disciplinary articles compiled by an extensive international network of over 1,000 faculty members at Oxford and other leading universities around the world, as well as think-tanks and institutes of international standing.”

This database provides the full text of articles from the political science journals published by Sage.
Rand Abstracts 1988- Connect
The Rand Corporation provides objective research on a variety of current issues and concerns. The Library subscribes to most Rand publications. This online database provides a comprehensive bibliography with abstracts for every publicly available Rand document beginning in 1988. The library has a collection of print volumes that cover the years 1963-1997 in Langsam Reference AS36.R34.
