The CRC has a large collection of audiovisual media/instructional materials. Many types of media can be found representing a wide variety of curriculum topics for all grade levels from preschool through grade twelve. These media are classified by the Dewey Decimal Classification System and consist of audiobooks, audiocassettes, audio CDs, bulletin board kits, card sets, CD-ROMs, charts, DVDs, games, kits, maps, models (including puppets), picture sets, posters, transparencies, videodiscs, and videocassettes. All of these audiovisual materials are intershelved in the Pre K – 12 Audiovisual Media section of the CRC with the exception of bulletin board kits, charts, posters, and maps. These latter materials are shelved in the large flat files near the Pre K – 12 AV section. CRC audiovisual media may be checked out for two weeks and renewed twice. The following represent methods you might use to find pre K – 12 audiovisual media depending on the situation.
Searches to find CRC audiovisuals can be conducted using UCLID, the Libraries’ online catalog. Several approaches can be used in searching in UCLID depending on your needs and the information that you have. Start all searches at the University Libraries home page http://www.libraries.uc.edu/ then click on “Library Catalog.” Next, follow one of the approaches below:
1. From UCLID Libraries Catalog Main Menu, click on the arrow in the “Location” area and from the pull
down menu that appears, select “Curriculum Resources Center.”
2. Next, click in the top window of the three Word Search windows at the top of the page
3. Type in the the concept or topic for which you wish to find audiovisual
media, e.g. solar system
4. Next, click on Search and a list of CRC audiovisual titles about the solar system will appear.
Click on a title and you will be given a call number and availability information.
NOTE: This search will also find other materials such as children’s and young adult books on the subject for which you searched. Media types, such as videotape, poster, model, picture set, will appear in brackets after each of the listed titles so that you can distinguish those that are audiovisual media.
You Need to Find Pre K – 12 Audiovisual Materials on a Particular Subject and Grade Level
If you wish to limit your topic search to a particular grade range, for example, audiovisual materials about the solar system on the 4th grade level, do the following:
1. Follow steps 1 – 3 above
2. Next, determine search term used in UCLID for the particular grade you want from
the following chart:
Grade Level Search Term to Type
Kindergarten pre
Preschool pre
1st, 2nd, 3rd grade pri or elem
primary grades pri or elem
4th, 5th, or 6th grade int or elem
intermediate grades int or elem
elementary grades pri or int or elem
7th or 8th grade jrhi or sec
junior high jrhi or sec
9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade srhi or sec
senior high srhi or sec
secondary grades jrhi or srhi or sec
3. Click in the middle Word Search window (solar system is typed in the top window) and type
elem or int
You must type both “elem” and “int” because some materials are designed
more for the intermediate grades but others can be used by all elementary
grades and therefore, “elem” only is used in the record. If you only typed
in “int” you would miss the materials that fit the topic but have “elem” in
the record.
4. Next, click on Search and a list of CRC audiovisual materials
about the solar system on the 4th grade level will appear. Clicking on selected
titles will provide you with the call number and availability information.
You Need to Find Pre K – 12 Audiovisual Materials on a Particular Subject
and Grade Level and Limit to Particular Audiovisual Material Types
If you wish to limit your topic search to a particular grade range and a particular material type or types for example, audiovisual materials about the solar system for 4th grade that are, for example, videotapes, DVDs, posters, and models, do the following:
2. Next, select the material type(s) that you would like. Use the chart
below to select from and to determine proper wording to type:
audiobook DVD
audiotape game
bulletin board kit map
card set model
cdrom or cd-rom picture set
chart poster
compact disc (audio CD) transparency
computer program videodisc
videotape
NOTE: just as you typed int or elem to cover both ways that 4th grade would be covered in a given record, when you use poster, you should also type chart because these are sometimes used interchangeably in cataloging and you don’t want to miss any materials. So it is a good idea when you are thinking a chart or poster to just use both in your search statement. Notice that or is used between each material type in the parentheses because each record searched will be only one material type.
4. Next, click on Search. A list of videotapes, DVDs, charts, posters, and models about the solar system with content on the 4th grade level will appear. Clicking on selected titles will provide you with the call number and availability information.
You Just Want to See What AV Media the CRC May Currently Have on the Shelf In A Given Subject Area
This method works best if you are simply looking to see what kinds of AV materials might be on the CRC shelf in a given subject area. You will need to know the Dewey classification number for your subject, however. There are a couple of ways of finding this number. One is to follow the steps above in using UCLID to search for AV materials on a given subject. Looking at some of the call numbers given in this search will give you an idea of the classification number to use when going to the AV shelves. Another way to find out the Dewey classification number is to go to the CRC Circulation Desk and ask if the number is available. The CRC keeps a chart at the desk with many of the topics taught in the school curriculum listed with their corresponding Dewey number.
The Pre K – 12 audiovisual media are shelved in three locations in the CRC.
Pre K – 12 Audiovisual Media: card sets, games, kits, models (includes puppets), picture sets, and transparencies (intershelved and arranged in numeric order by the Dewey Decimal number)
Pre K – 12 Electronic: audio compact discs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and videotapes (intershelved and arranged in numeric order by the Dewey Decimal number)
Flat Files: bulletin board kits, charts, posters, maps (intershelved and arranged in numeric order by the Dewey Decimal number)
By using the shelf markers as guides, find the shelves that have the media with the classification number that you are looking for. An example might be that you are teaching about insects. Using one of the methods above, you find that the Dewey number for insects is 595.7. Going to the area of the Pre K – 12 AV shelves where this number is found, you might find shelved together a variety of media on this subject, such as overhead transparencies, a picture set, a game, and a model. Going to the Pre K – 12 Electronic shelves, you may find shelved in the 595.7 area in this section, DVDs, videotapes, and a CD-ROM. Going to the flat files and using the same number, 595.7, you may find in the drawer containing 595.7 a bulletin board kit, some posters and a chart on insects.
