This site is maintained by a staff at Minnesota State University under the direction of anthropologist Dr. Richard A. Strachan. A virtual museum, it can be navigated by using an interactive floor plan approach or by using the major topic links with their mouse-over links. Major categories include archaeology, anthropology, biology, cultures, history, and prehistory. The mouse-over links provide access to topics within the major categories. For example, the mouse-over for archaeology provides links to categories such as artifacts, fieldwork, etc., the mouse-over for anthropology provides links to general anthropology, language, etc., and for cultures, the mouse-over provides links to aging, kinship, language, etc.

It covers over 6,000 living languages. The online version includes links to publications, software, and an extensive bibliography of over 12,000 citations. There are links to its' major categories of a Country Index with Maps, Language Names, Language Codes and Language Families. The Google search engine, which is provided, permits searching the worldwide web or limiting a search to Ethnologue.
