Dictionaries & Thesauri

Acronym Finder – “The Acronym Finder is a world wide web searchable database of more than 2,426,000 abbreviations and acronyms about computers, technology, telecommunications, and military acronyms and abbreviations.

American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language – online version of the 4th edition (2000), featuring over 200,000 entries.  Entries include pronunciation guide, definition, and brief etymology. Searchable only, no browsing.

Dictionary.com – Searches across various dictionaries and provides results listing sources.  If a word is spelled incorrectly, a list of suggestions will be provided.

Merriam-Webster Online – Abridged version provides searching of the dictionary and thesaurus.  Pronunciation guide included.

OneLook Dictionary Search – “More than 5 million words in more than 900 online dictionaries are indexed by the OneLook® search engine.”

Online Etymology Dictionary--Dictionary of word origins compiled by Douglas Harper, historian and author.

Oxford English Dictionary - Contains the complete second edition, the three OED Additions volumes published in the 1990s, and the first section of revised text.  Provides definitions of a word or phrase.

Oxford Reference Online - The Core Collection is a huge and comprehensive resource that contains over 100 dictionaries and reference titles covering the complete subject spectrum: from General Reference and Language to Science and Medicine, and from Humanities and Social Sciences to Business and Professional.

Roget's II, the New Thesaurus (3rd edition, 1995) – “Containing 35,000 synonyms and over 250,000 cross-references in an easy-to-use format, this thesaurus features succinct word definitions and an innovative hyperlinked category index.”

Rhyming Dictionary – Allows searching for rhymes, synonyms, definitions, homophones, etc.
