Faculty Course Reserve Guidelines

Course Reserves

Faculty may request course materials to be placed on Traditional or Blackboard eReserve (Electronic Reserve).  Loan periods for Traditional Reserve materials are generally at the discretion of the faculty member and range from Two Hour/Library Use Only, Overnight, and Three Day loans. Students are required to have a valid photo ID to check-out Traditional Reserve materials (UC ID or driver’s license). Blackboard eReserves allows faculty to make course-related material available to their students online 24/7.

Instructor Information

Where do I place material on Reserve?

The Traditional Reserve collection is located behind the front Information Desk in the RWC Library on the first floor of the Muntz Building.  If you have any questions you may reach us by phone at 513-745-5710 or visit our library homepage at http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/rwc/.

How do I place material on Reserve?

Bring the material to the front Information Desk and complete either a Traditional or Blackboard eReserve Request form.  Reserve requests may also be submitted by campus mail.   Electronic versions of the forms are available by clicking on the links below. Please allow 3 business days to process Reserve requests. All Reserve requests are processed in the order they are received.

What may be placed on Reserve?

Traditional Reserves

  • Books and Multimedia: Circulating books and multimedia material from the RWC Library or other UC libraries may be placed on Traditional Reserve. Materials from other UC libraries should be requested by the Circulation Manager, and NOT requested or checked out by the instructor.
  • Personal Copies of Textbooks: Personal copies can be placed on Reserve with the understanding that the RWC Library assumes no responsibility for replacing them should they become lost, damaged or destroyed. If this happens, faculty will be notified to either replace the copy or to withdraw it from the Reserve. If you submit a personal copy to be placed on Reserve and the Library owns that same book, the library copy will be placed on Reserve and we will return your copy to you.

New material requests should be submitted to your Library Liaison. Some new materials can take up to four weeks to receive.

Blackboard eReserves (Electronic Reserve)

  • A Book Chapter, Personal Notes, Exams, etc.
  • Articles:  If a paper copy is submitted and the library has the electronic version of the article, a link to the electronic version will be placed on Reserve.

To consult Faculty Guidelines for Blackboard eReserves, please visit: http://www.libraries.uc.edu/services/reserves/eres_guidelines.html

What may NOT be placed on Reserve?

Traditional Reserves

  • Periodicals, rented videos, reference books, microfilm, OhioLINK or Interlibrary Loan materials.

Blackboard eReserves (Electronic Reserve)

  • Due to copyright, the amount of content and length of time that material is placed on Reserve may be restricted. Use of copyrighted materials for consecutive quarters is prohibited unless copyright permission is secured. The RWC Library can seek permission through the Copyright Clearance Center on behalf of faculty; however, the request must be submitted at least four weeks in advance. More complex requests can take even longer. Please contact the Circulation Manager, Tammy Manger at 936-1542 or mangerta@ucrwcu.rwc.uc.edu for more information.

The RWC Library complies with the copyright law (Title 17, United States Code) governing the reproduction and distribution of copyrighted materials.  Please consult the University Libraries Copyright Assistance web site, at http://www.libraries.uc.edu/copyright/ , for FAQ’s and resources on copyright.

How long does material remain on Reserve?

Traditional Reserve materials are removed at the end of the quarter designated on the Reserve form. The maximum request period is one academic year. Library copies are returned to the stacks.  All personal copies are returned to the instructor.

Permanent Reserve Policy: The RWC Library does not maintain Permanent Reserves except where materials have a consistent pattern of high demand. All materials placed on Permanent Reserve will be reviewed for circulation activity. Faculty members will be contacted regarding the removal of Permanent Reserve items with minimal to no use. All requests for a Permanent Reserve should be directed to the Circulation Manager, Tammy Manger at 936-1542 or mangerta@ucrwcu.rwc.uc.edu

Blackboard eReserve materials are removed at the end of each quarter.
