New Book List for books received in December 2006 .
What happened this past fall:
- The University switched from Social Security numbers (SSN) to M numbers for UCID. As of December 31, all SSNs were removed from the library system. If you do not know your M number, please visit http://www.uc.edu/ucid/ for further information.
- The Engineering Library migrated from engrlib.uc.edu to libraries.uc.edu/libraries/engr. While both sites are currently online, the old site is no longer updated and will be used for other purposes. Be sure to adjust your bookmarks to the new address.
- The database called Applied Science and Technology Index (from the Wilson Company of Readers' Guide fame) was discontinued by OhioLINK and replaced by Computer and Applied Science Complete (CASC). CASC is a general science and engineering database covering 3-4 times more journal titles, of which a third are full-text online. This database was used in engineering library assignments during fall quarter and proved to be a satisfactory replacement.
What else is happening?

A new OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC) interface is scheduled to go live on January 8, 2007. The URL is: http://journals.ohiolink.edu/ejc . The current site has a preview link showing the upcoming change.
Reminder: anyone who wishes to keep saved alerts or searches from an old ScienceServer account will need to migrate that information to the new interface by the end of January. See http://olc7.ohiolink.edu/whatsnew/archives/000177.html.
- Images.MD is now available through OhioLINK. It's an online encyclopedia of medical images, compiles more than
55,000 images from more than 90 collections ranging from allergy to urology,
each accompanied by detailed and informative text contributed by more than
2,000 medical experts. Check it out at http://www.images.md/ .
- In March 2006 the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE, the British counterpart of IEEE) merged with the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE) to form a new institution, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (www.theiet.org). The IEE Proceedings suite of journals will change name to reflect the fact that they are now published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology. As of January 1, 2007, the IEE Proceedings titles will be collectively known as the IET Research Journals. The number of titles within the package will increase from 16 to 20. These titles will remain part of the IEEE Electronic Library (IEL) accessed through IEEExplore/IEL.
- Speaking of IEL, the first issue of IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine was published last summer and is available through the IEEE Xplore digital library.
- The Bourne Report Podcast discusses the commercial use of MEMS and Nanotechnology in various markets and applications. It's a computer-based radio show talking about how Nano/MEMS are changing how we live, work and play. You can download or listen to each episode directly from the website (http://bournereport.podOmatic.com) or subscribe via iTunes (just search for “Bourne Report”); in both instances, it’s free.
Newsletter feature:
RefWorks is an online research, writing and collaboration tool. It enables you to import citations from various databases, to organize them in folders pertaining to your research, to output references for papers in the necessary format, and to share references with team members. Many of our databases at UC have an "export to RefWorks" feature. Unlike EndNote, RefWorks is free to all UC faculty and students, and it is available on the web, making it accessible from anywhere. Check the Engineering Library workshop schedule for opportunities to learn more about RefWorks.
