Information for Homework Assignment for 20-CS-110

Write a short paper on a topic chosen from Professor Annexstein's suggested list at the bottom of this page. The topic areas are very broad. Narrow the topic down. Your paper will summarize information you find using library and information resources, and will include a list of references at the end, properly formatted.
To gather information for your paper, follow the steps below. Work on this assignment in groups of three during lab. Submit the paper, in Word format, via the Blackboard digital drop box at the end of class, or if you don't finish, before the next class Tuesday October 2.
To find materials you will need access to the Library Catalog
and the web.
Access is available through
five workstations in the Engineering Library, or
sixteen workstations in the Information Commons at Engineering, or
the Engineering
PC and Unix labs
Access is also available in the Information Commons at Langsam Library.
1. To find books:
- In the Library Catalog use a keyword search. Use the search tips to refine your search.
- Hint: email the library catalog record to yourself for printing or editing. It has all the information you need for citing it in your paper. (Save the desired records, click "Save Marked Records" and then View Saved Records. Brief Display has the information you need for citing the reference. Full Display includes the Call Number and Subject Headings.)
- You may also try online book collections such as: netLibrary

5. To compile your assignment:
- Use your own words in writing your paper. DO NOT cut and paste information from the abstracts or
articles. Improper citing of quoted or paraphrased material constitutes
plagiarism. Put reference numbers in brackets [ ] indicating the source for your information. Exact wording from a source must have quotemarks around it as well as a reference to the source.
- In the numbered list of references at the end of your paper, use the
IEEE format. References from the various sources must conform to this format.
- To cite a web site, provide the person or organization responsible
for the page, the title of the web page, the date if any, the location (URL
beginning with http://), and [the date accessed in brackets]. Use
the same style as for the other references in formatting author names, etc.
