Homework Assignment for Introduction to Chemicals and Materials Engineering, 20-CME-100
For this assignment you will find information on a topic chosen from the list at the bottom of this assignment description. You will find the materials in the library and its online resources (a book, a reference book, one journal article) and find information on the web. Write a short paper (less than one page) on the topic. References must be included.
Submit your assignment to Dr. Beaucage by class time on Wednesday, November 29, 2006.
You will need UC's library catalog (UCLID) to complete the assignment.
Access the library catalog through
your laptop, or
six workstations in the Engineering Library, or
sixteen workstations in the Information Commons, or
the Engineering PC and Unix labs.
Assignment
1. Choose a topic from the list below.
2. Find a book with information on topic.
- Connect to the library catalog from the Engineering Library homepage.
- Search by keyword for your topic. Use the Keyword Search Tips to help you formulate a search.
- Find a book on the shelf or online and read pages with information on your topic.
- Hint: email the record to yourself for printing or editing. It has all the information you need for citing it for the paper. (Mark the desired records, click "Save Marked Records" and then View Saved Records. Brief Display has the information you need for citing the reference. Full Display includes the Call Number and Subject Headings.)
- You may also try collections of online books: netLibrary , Safari, CRCnetBASE, Referex, Xreferplus or Knovel .
3. Find a reference book:
- From the Engineering Library homepage click on the link called Reference Guides and select an appropriate subject area.
- Review the titles listed in the section of the guide entitled HANDBOOKS and ENCYCLOPEDIAS.
- Use the call numbers provided to find the books in the Engineering Reference collection, or click on links to online reference works.
- Find specific sections or pages in the Reference book with relevant information.
4. Find an article on your topic in a journal (magazine, periodical). Choose ONE of the following sources.
- Computer and Applied Science Complete
- From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online, then Computer and Applied Science Complete (CASC) .
- Search all fields, limiting only if you get too much material. Limiting to Title field is a good way to narrow a search.
- Use "Find a copy" or "Article Linker" feature to find the article. Read the article.
- You may E-mail the record to yourself with your choice of format.
- Academic Search Complete
- From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online, then Academic Search Complete.
- Find your terms using the Default Fields. Read full-text of article.
- OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center (EJC)
- From the Engineering Library homepage, select EJC in the Expresslinks.
- Find your terms using the EJC search feature. Read full-text of article.
- Newspaper Source
- From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online, then Newspaper Source.
- LexisNexis Academic
- From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online, then LexisNexis Academic .
- Select News - General News. Set Source to Major Newspapers or Magazines and Journals. Read article.
- OR select Business - Industry & Market - choose an industry from the Industry pull-down menu. Read article.

6. Write up your findings.
- Write a short summary on your topic based on your findings. Use your own words in writing your essay. DO NOT cut and paste information from the abstracts or articles. Improper citing of quoted or paraphrased material constitutes plagiarism. Put reference numbers in brackets [ ] indicating the source for your information. Exact wording from a source must have quotemarks around it as well as a reference to the source.
- At the end, cite each source (books, journal article and web site) you used in preparing the summary. Use the AIChE Journal format (they use AMA Style Guide) to cite your sources. To cite a web site provide the person or organization responsible for the page, the title of the web page, the location of publication or organization responsible if any, the date if any, and [URL beginning with http:// and the date accessed in brackets]. (Use the same style as for the other references.)
- Be sure to include page numbers for the reference book and journal article.
