Homework Assignment for ChE Grad Students
Teaching Methodologies 20 CHE 921, Fall 2003
For this assignment you will research a topic relating to teaching methods, find materials in the library and its online resources, and write a short paper (less than one page) on your topic. References cited in the text must be included in proper format in a bibliography at the end of the paper. Satisfactory completion of the assignment is required for seminar credit.
This assignment is due November 10, 2003 to Dr. Guliants.
You will need UCLID/OhioLINK (the online catalog) to complete the assignment. Access the web version from
six PC workstations in the Engineering Library (850 Baldwin Hall), or
sixteen PC workstations in the Information Commons, or
ALL the Engineering PC and Unix labs.

- Select a topic from the list below.
- Begin your paper with
- a short description of the topic you will research and
- the keywords you chose to find information.
- Find one book.
- Use UCLID/OhioLINK . Find the book on the shelf in the library. Identify and read pages of the book relevant to your topic.
- In your bibliography, provide a complete reference for the book according to the prescribed format.
- Following the reference, provide call number and subject headings in brackets [].
- Find one reference book relating to the subject you are teaching.
- Use the Reference Guides on the Engineering Library homepage. Refer to the section of the guides called HANDBOOKS and ENCYCLOPEDIAS. Find the book in the reference collection OR use the Education Reference Guide to find a reference book.
- Provide a complete citation for the reference book in your bibliography, including the specific pages containing relevant information.
- Find one journal article using Compendex .
- Limit the publication type to journal articles.
- Use the "Find a Copy" link to locate a source. Read the article!
- In your bibliography, indicate which article you found using Compendex.
- Find at least one journal article using Chemical Abstracts (CA) .
- Use SciFinder Scholar on workstations in Engineering Reference, the Information Commons at Engineering or at the Chem/Bio Library to access CA.
- In your bibliography, cite the article found.
- Search ERIC or Education Abstracts or Academic Search Premier or IEEExplore for your topic.
- Find an article or report on your topic.
- In your bibliography indicate which source you used as well as the article found. (ERIC reports not found online are on microfiche in Langsam Library filed by ED number.)
- Find at least one article using the Cited Reference Search option in Science Citation Index (SCI).
- The article should cite an author or article you have already found. (If finding a cited article is not possible, find an article by an author of an article you have already found.)
- Use the abstract if the article is not available online through OhioLINK's EJC.
- In your bibliography, indicate which articles you found using Science Citation Index.
- Search the web.
- Use advanced search techniques of your favorite search engine.
- Find a substantive, authoritative site relating to your topic.
- Include authorship, title, URL, date, and [date accessed in brackets] in the citation for the bibliography.
- In your own words, write a paragraph or two on the topic based on the information you have read. DO NOT cut and paste information from the abstracts or articles you found. Without proper citing of quoted or paraphrased material, this would constitute plagiarism. Each reference cited in your text should be identified by a [number in brackets] corresponding to its number in the bibliography.
- Conclude the paper with a bibliography of the seven references, in AIChE format for citing the references. (Do NOT attach printouts for a bibliography.) Put the references in the order of the assignment and label each accordingly, as follows:
