Homework Assignment for Intro to Engineering 100 - Aerospace Engineering

For this portion of your STK project report due to Dr. Williams May 17, 2004, your team will define a topic relating to satellite applications and find information to produce a short summary with four references.

General areas of application include: Communications, Defense Systems, Design (spacecraft or satellite systems), Missile Defense, Navigation, Operations (flight or satellite), Remote Sensing and Imaging, and Science Research.

Working as a team, find materials in the library and its online resources and on the web. The four references must include at least one book, at least one journal article, and no more than one web site. Write a team summary (less than one page) on the topic. References must be written in AIAA format.

1. Define your team's topic.

2. Find books with information on topic.

• Connect to UCLID.
• Search the topic by keyword.  Use the help information at the bottom of the search page.
• Note the call numbers and subject headings for the most relevant books. These can lead to other relevant books. Find the books on the shelf and read pages with relevant information.
• Hint: email the UCLID/OhioLINK record to yourself (or team member collecting references) for printing or editing.  It has all the information needed for citing it.  Select Export this Record, then View Marked Records. Choose Full Display format.

      To find a reference book, such as a directory, handbook or encyclopedia:

• From the Engineering Library homepage, click on the link called Reference Guides. Select Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from the list of guides.
• Review the titles listed in the section of the guide entitled HANDBOOKS and ENCYCLOPEDIAS. If you find relevant pages in a reference book, include the pages in your citation.

3. Find an article on your topic in a journal (magazine).  Choose one or more of the five following sources.

• Applied Science and Technology Abstracts
• From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online - A, then Applied Science and Technology Abstracts.
• Search the topic by keyword.
•  Look for a relevant article, click on Find a Copy and follow link to View full text. If no full text is available, follow the link to the UC library catalog and look for the journal volume in print. Read the article.
• To export the record to email, mark and store, then email using the brief format (for citing) or full format (to examine subject headings).
  The "Appears in" information shows the journal title and issue that the article is in.  This information is essential for citing a reference properly.

• Aerospace and High Technology Database
• From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online - A, then Aerospace and High Technology Database.
• Search the topic by keyword.  View Record to see an abstract and assigned descriptors (subject headings).  Choose the records that are most appropriate.  The Find a Copy link will lead to full text if any is available.  Read article.
• Note title, author and source information for citing references.

• LexisNexis Academic
• From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online - L, then LexisNexis Academic.
• Select News - General News. Set Source to Major Newspapers or Magazines and Journals.  Read article.
• OR select Business - Industry & Market - Aerospace..., Medical, or other area from the Industry pull-down menu.  Read article.

OR

• Academic Search Complete
• From the Engineering Library homepage, select Databases Online - A - Academic Search Complete .
• Search your terms using the Default Fields. Read full-text of article.

OR

• OhioLINK's Electronic Journal Center
• From the Engineering Library homepage, select EJC under the Expresslinks.
• Use the Search link at the top of the screen and search for topic in "Any Field."
• Read full-text of article.

4. To find a website:

• Use Google, AltaVista, Dogpile for a metasearch engine, or any other search engine you prefer.
• Search using the help feature or advanced search tips for details on forming a search query.  For example in a Google Advanced Search you can designate synonyms or phrases, limit to .edu domains, etc. In AltaVista you can use quotation marks to identify a phrase, a "+" sign before a word or phrase to ensure it will be included, and domain:edu to limit to educational sites only.)
• Select preferrably non-commercial sites with current pages and clear authorship. There is a lot of wrong information on the  web!

5. Write up your findings.

• The team or designated member should write the summary of your team's readings.  DO NOT cut and paste information from the abstracts or articles.  Without proper citing of quoted material, this would constitute plagiarism.
• Following the summary, cite each source (books, journal articles and web site) your team used in preparing the summary.  Use the AIAA format to cite the sources. 
• To cite a web site provide the person or organization responsible for the page, the title of the web page, the location of publication or organization responsible if any, the date if any, and [URL beginning with http:// and the date accessed in brackets].  (Use the same style as for the other references.)
• Be sure to include page numbers for books and journal articles.
