ARTstor Tutorial for Faculty

Lesson 1: Registering/Logging In to ARTstor and Finding Images
- Register:
- Go to http://www.artstor.org
- Click on the GO button
- Select Register from the upper right corner.
- Enter your email address and a password containing at least 7 characters
- Logging In (if you have already registered):
- Select Logon from the upper right corner
- Enter your email address and password
- Browse Collections:
- Click on the ARTstor’s Collections link in the middle of the page, find the Huntington Archive of Asian Art and click on the plus sign
- Click on the plus sign next to Japan
- Choose Modern
- To browse through more collections, click on the ARTstor logo at the top left (this returns you to the home page) and click on the links in the center of the page
- Finding Images (there are a variety of ways to search for images, from simple to advanced):
- Basic search
- In the Search box, enter "Leonardo Madonna" (note that nothing is needed between terms)
- Click on the Search button
- Advanced search
- Click on the Advanced Search tab and then Advanced Search again
- Enter "Leonardo" then using the drop down box change In Any Field to In Creator Only
- Choose And in the second box
- Enter "Madonna of the Rocks" and then in the drop down box choose In Title Only
- Click the Search button
- Test yourself:
- Perform a search for the following image:

Lesson 2: Creating Image Groups
Images can be saved into groups for future reference. These images are stored on the ARTstor server; you will be able to see them anytime that you logon to the database:
- Make sure that you are logged into ARTstor by looking at the welcome message at the bottom left of the screen. You will see Welcome >your email address<
- Perform a search for images of Winston Churchill
- Single click on 5 images that you find interesting (selected images will be surrounded by a yellow box)
- Click on Image Groups
- Select Save Selected Images to New Group
- My Work Folder will be displayed; click inside the second box and name the folder "Churchill"
- Create New Group should be selected
- Click Save and Open to see your selected images
Note: image order can be changed by dragging an image and placing it on the top of another. Anytime you make a change, save your changes by clicking on Image Groups and then Save Group.
- Test yourself:
- Perform an advanced search to find images of architecture in Chicago (Hint: enter "Chicago" in the in any field box and then select Architecture and City Planning in the Object Classification box , and click Search)
- Save 5 images and name the group "Architecture in Chicago"
- Click and drag to reorder your images
- Save your changes
Lesson 3: Creating a Shared Folder (you will need to register for instructor privileges)
A Shared Folder is one that you create for your class that can be seen by your students when they access ARTstor:
- Click on Tools
- Choose Create Shared Folder
- Name your folder ">Your Last Name<, World War II"
- Click Continue
- Select the radio button labeled Everyone At My Institution
- Click Continue
- Select Only Me
- Click Finish
Now we will copy the images in the folder named Churchill (in your Work Folder) into your Shared Folder
- Click on Image Groups
- Click on Open Group
- Choose Churchill from My Work Folder
- Click Open
- Click on Image Groups
- Choose Save Group As
- Click on the down arrow button next to My Work Folder and choose the shared folder you created, titled ">Your Last Name<, World War II"
- The second box will automatically fill in the title of your image group, however you can change it by clicking in the box
- Click Save & Open
- Click on the ARTstor logo at the top left and return to the home page
- Under View Image Groups, click on the arrow down button and find your shared folder and then select Chapter 1 in the Select a Group box
- Click Submit
Now let’s delete your Shared Folder
- Select Tools
- Choose Folder Administration
- Make sure the Folders/Groups tab is displayed
- Select ">Your Last Name<, World War II"
- Click the Delete button on the left and then Yes, I am Sure I Want to Delete
- Close this window
Lesson 4: Downloading ARTstor Images to Use in PowerPoint
- Perform a search for a painting titled Astronomer by Johannes Vermeer
- Double-click on the image to open it
- Click icon that looks like a floppy disc
- Click I Accept button
- Name the file "vermeer.jpg" and save to your desktop
- Open PowerPoint
- Click on Format on the top menu bar
- Click on Slide Layout and choose the template that is blank
- Go to Insert on the Menu bar and choose Picture then From File
- Browse to your "vermeer.jpg" on the desktop and click Insert
- To make a black background choose Format, then Background, and then select black and Apply To All
Lesson 6: Using the Offline Image Viewer (OIV)
Exercise 1
Create a presentation without connecting to the Internet by using the Offline Image Viewer. The OIV must be installed on your PC. To install, make sure you are logged in, go to Tools, Download Offline Viewer, and then Complete the Installation.
- Double-click on the OIV icon (once installed the OIV will be on the desktop or under Programs)
- Choose the radio button labeled Create a New Presentation from ARTstor Images?
- Click OK
- Enter your email address and password and click Next
- Double-click on My Work Folder and then select Churchill
- Click Download. Once the images are downloaded, reorder a few images by clicking and dragging an image on top of another.
- Begin the presentation by double-clicking on the first image
- Use the page down button on your keyboard to scroll through the images
- Click on the i button at the top left corner of the screen to see the title, artist and date. Click the i again to see the complete image data
- Close presentation by hitting the ESC key (on your keyboard)
- Leave this file open as it will be used for the next exercise
Exercise 2
You may want to add your own personal images into ARTstor for a presentation. Jpeg is the best format to use; pixels should be at least 1024 X 768 to fill the screen.
- Click Insert from the top menu bar and choose Local Image(s)
- Browse to My Pictures ---> Open ---> Sample Pictures ---> Select any of the available pictures
- Click Add
- To save the presentation, click File, then Save, name the file, and save to the desktop.
- Close the OIV. You can open the file again by double clicking on it.
